What happens here

This video provides a detailed overview of operating a Wood-Mizer LT40 Wide portable sawmill, focusing on the hydraulic log handling features used to load, position, and mill persimmon logs. It demonstrates the process from preparing the sawmill and loading a log using lift arms and a log arch, through debarking and the initial cuts, to revealing the milled lumber.

and if i don't do it nobody will it ain't hard to say i'm a working man still it ain't hard to say that i love this meal good morning farm fans and welcome back to another sawmill sundays here on the stoney ridge farm hope you're all having a very blessed day what we're going to be doing today is running some exotic lumber so when you think exotic lumber you might think like mahogany or cherry today we're going to be running some persimmon that we cut right off the farm here hopefully i'll get you some footage of that persimmon tree dropping i didn't want to cut these trees they're about that big but they're right where my new shop building is going to go so we had to cut them we use everything on the farm nothing goes to waste so the slabs that come off of these will be used for firewood we're going to try our best to mill up and get the most value out of this persimmon wood so what we're going to do and i've never milled persimmon this will probably be the last opportunity that i ever have to do this what we're going to do is we're going to roll them up on the mill there are four persimmon logs right here they're sitting right there and we're gonna show you guys what the persimmon looks like once it's milled it could be a light color it could be a dark color it could be all sorts of stuff we're gonna explore the grain we're gonna spread some water on it and show you guys how this mill makes that persimmon shine so right down here are the persimmon logs in line is white oak back here is butternut walnut and you'll see that in a future sawmill sunday and we're also we have some wild cherry some more white oak and some red oak back here so lots of cool sawmill sundaes to come guys you guys are really going to love this what we're running here and this is by popular demand folks asked last time i did a sawmill sunday how does this work man so we're going to give you some tidbits and the basics of how this sawmill works this is the wood mizer lt40 extra wide sawmill there are a few things right here that i need to describe to you so there's a little gauge right here we need to watch that gauge and our goal is 3000 psi that's how tight this blade is and this is a bandsaw mill okay and that's a camera this critter is really really handy to have and it's the extra wide model so i can take up to a 36 inch log right there now this you'll see running throughout this procedure and you'll see a blade on there a little shadow on that blade those are carbide tips and this is called the debarker it's an option that you can add onto your wood miser right here we've got some lift arms these lift arms will raise this up onto the log deck and the log deck has what we call dogs that raise up in the back you'll see that in the video also this is a foot that holds the log in place these are rollers there's a roller here and a roller right there in the back those rollers are in case a log is really really fat on one end so the butt end of a log might be way bigger than the small end of a log so we need to raise it up so we get our first cut as a great nice pretty level cut this mill the lt40 wide will cut up to a 21 foot log now you probably saw me lubricating a little bit right here i like to lubricate that with every time i start the mill there are a few things that are just maintenance items that just have to be done this is a portable sawmill in other words it'll roll on wheels i can take it and i'll never go hungry as long as i have this portable sawmill it's your fuel tank this is your lubricant called the lubemizer so comes out this is just soapy water right here in the summertime we run just soapy water in the winter time we run windshield washer fluid because it won't freeze and it won't freeze up these lines there's a little filter right here got to keep an eye on it last time i ran the mill i had a clog had a few things go wrong with me last time this is the controller for the lube miser and we'll have it set on one and pulse so we can set it onto pulse or continuous and that only runs when i'm driving forward so i drive the mill forward that way and i back the mill back this way you'll see me walking with the mill this is the controls for that debarker this turns on our blade this very simply widens the swath right here so we can open this all the way up to take a full 36 inches or we're milling smaller lumber and we want to get that tip as close to the board as we possibly can or the log as we possibly can you got to think the longer that blade the more chance of so we don't want it to wobble we want it to be straight this is the speed in which the mill drives this is up and down okay so this lifts the mill up and down there's a little computer at work here it's a very very simple computer this is called the wood miser simple set simple set very easy what we're going to be using it today we'll set it this is a manual setting and this is the simple set 1 and 1 16 that is how thick we are going to be cutting our boards today and you can see the up and down operation right here well evidently just down there we go cool these are the hydraulics this is all of our hydraulic controls for moving everything on this mill tipping the logs up rolling the logs and doing everything this makes this a one-man job versus a three-man job now without further ado we're gonna take our logox three-in-one forestry multi-tool and we're gonna roll this first log up on the mill and get busy [Music] contact [Music] all right man that milled up nice that stuff went uh the blade went through like butter man so the reveal it's time for the reveal we're gonna wet this down a little bit and you'll notice i cut all those cuts and just left them stacked up that helps stabilize the log or the cant the big square part that's called a cant it's a log when we put it on when we square it off it's called a cant let's take a look at this now this type of lumber can be used for all sorts of stuff they make golf clubs out of them most likely this will be used for some home decor projects around the house we're putting together a wood shop guys so we'll be building all kinds of stuff on the farm let's get the reveal this persimmon seems really light colored some persimmon can be really dark colored almost black like walnut let's scrape that guy off give her a little water we call it water around here oh man look at that i see some knife handles in my future got a little burl in there beautiful beautiful lumber guys beautiful just doesn't get any better than that wow this is called virginia persimmon there are different varieties out there wow well that is sawmill sunday for this sunday guys that's what persimmon lumber looks like if i get into any of these and they look any different we'll get you a shot after the end credits man what an awesome day i can't wait to mill all this up we'll stack it in a barn and we'll let it dry persimmon dries very finicky so it likes to move a lot when it dries so we're going to stack this and then we're going to put some more lumber on top of it probably this white oak so that it holds steady this is going to make knife handles all sorts of fun projects for the farm guys thanks a lot pound that like button we'll see you next time on the stoney ridge farm i gotta offload all that lumber onto this tym tractor get busy thanks guys hope you enjoyed sawmill sunday this week [Music] here oh yeah daddy all right let's keep it up like that so our luck don't run out always finding something fun on the farm glad we didn't find that with a mower horseshoe
