Retaining Wall Installation

What happens here

To provide lateral stability, geogrid is installed between courses of the retaining wall blocks. This netting-like material is rolled out horizontally, extending backward into the compacted drainage stone and soil, acting like rebar in concrete to tie the wall into the earth. It's laid over a course of blocks, then covered with more drainage stone, and then the next course of blocks is placed on top, effectively 'sandwiching' the geogrid. This process is repeated at regular intervals, depending on the wall's height and block type, to create a robust tie-back system.

Goal: Provide lateral reinforcement to the retaining wall, tying it into the soil behind it.

Tools and materials

  • Geogrid — Providing horizontal reinforcement and tie-back strength for the wall
  • Drainage Stone N/A — Backfilling around the geogrid and wall courses
