Apply Initial Joint Compound Coat

What happens here

Using a flexible taping knife, scoop a small amount of joint compound (often referred to as 'mud') from a mud pan. Begin by applying the compound directly over the patched area, pressing firmly to fill any depressions, cover mesh tape, or seal a patch. Spread the compound evenly, working from the center outwards and feathering the edges to thin the compound where it meets the existing wall surface. Scrape off any excess compound from the knife and return it to the mud pan. Repeat this process, applying consistent pressure to create a flat, uniform layer. This first coat establishes the foundation for subsequent smoothing.

Goal: Apply an initial or intermediate layer of joint compound over the prepared drywall patch to fill any gaps or imperfections and begin establishing a smooth surface.
