Raising Chickens Series: Preparing the brooder..picking up the baby birds!

What happens here

Place the chosen brooder container, such as a large galvanized stock tank (e.g., Countyline tote), in a sheltered indoor area like a garage or barn. Line the bottom of the tank with a layer of wood shavings or synthetic straw matting for bedding. Position the chick waterer and feeders within the brooder. For the waterer, add small rocks or gravel to the water tray to prevent newly hatched chicks from accidentally drowning and to help keep the water cleaner. Hang the heat lamp above the brooder at an appropriate height to provide the target temperature of 95-100 degrees Fahrenheit, monitoring with the thermometer. Adjust the lamp's height as needed; if chicks huddle directly under the lamp, they are too cold; if they spread out away from it, they are too hot.

Goal: Physically set up the internal components of the brooder structure to create a warm and safe environment for the chicks.
