Compacting and Joint Sand Application
At 0:20 in
Pool Apron Paver Patio + Firepit
What happens here
After all pavers are laid and the fire pit is constructed, the entire paver surface needs to be compacted. This is done by running a plate compactor over the patio multiple times in different directions to settle the pavers evenly into the bedding sand. Once compacted, polymeric sand is spread generously over the entire paver surface. A push broom is used to sweep the polymeric sand into all the joints between the pavers. Excess sand is then removed, and the surface is lightly misted with water using a garden hose with a fine spray nozzle. This activates the polymers in the sand, causing it to harden and lock the pavers together, preventing weed growth and insect infestation.
Goal: Secure pavers and fill joints for stability and weed prevention.
Tools and materials
- Garden Hose with Fine Spray Nozzle — Activating the polymeric sand
- Leaf Blower — Removing excess polymeric sand from the paver surface before wetting
- Plate Compactor — Final compaction of the pavers into the bedding sand
- Polymeric Sand — Filling paver joints to lock them in place and prevent weeds
- Push Broom — Sweeping polymeric sand into the paver joints
