What happens here
This DIY project details the process of stabilizing a backyard slope using straw blankets and sod, followed by planting various vegetation. The project addresses issues of soil erosion caused by heavy rains and dog activity, emphasizing the importance of proper material placement and stapling for effective stabilization and successful plant growth. It includes procurement of materials from a specialized landscape supplier and highlights the long-term benefits of pond landscaping.

(16,090 characters)some of you guys may be asking is it better to lay it this way or this way blah blah blah blah blah blah blah but that's what I get for thinking it's better to lay it this way I got lazy and I did it this way just level out the all your dog prints you can do it this way requires more of these things [Music] uhoh the wife is thinking we're getting stuff finalized finally so the work after the main work is done I bought 100 cads yesterday off of Amazon my son said he'll never go swimming in it again they we're freaking monster C we have to reestablish this slope that is one of the the the key things that I need to do to to tie all this vegetation so we're going to be using something called a straw blanket and what that is is that is a biodegradable netting that you staple to the slope and it has hay woven into it and what that does is it's it doesn't seal the slope by any means so everything can grow up and through that slope but it ties the slope together and until your vegetation can get reestablished so we're going to uh we're going to go down we got a local Greenhouse here that uh hopefully should have what we need we we'll grab that plus we're going to grab all the plants to redo this slope and then we're also going to be uh sing up here as you can see at the German Shepherds bear come bear and I don't know where baby is uh the German Shepherds have just trampled the heck out of this we had this all nice and hand raked out yesterday but they need to get out and go potty so this is going to get Rehand ra and then new sod will be put in place and six-way Staples because of him he has this weird fascination of lifting it up tearing it and then shaking it like it's a dead animal that uh did an injustice to his mom dad cuz I don't get it personally but every single piece of side even on the flat ground is going to be six-way stap one in each Corner two in the center to keep him from rooting them up tearing them apart as much as possible Zach I'm giving you the camera when you go to Magnus and sod the sod's been paid for okay all you got to do is go down there they may call me let me know what the grand total is just bring the receipt back you got one pallet you got to return there Magnus inside and it's painted in red and they always have white letters on them so I'll show you where that is okay show these guys around Magnus and S A little bit when you go there it's kind of a cool place a little tight Place Zach's never been there maybe some I've never gotten s before so well this is going to be an adventure Zach's off on an adventure I tell you my Adventures are justed up north that's why I wear this St Christopher metal what does that mean Patron state of Travelers oh yeah I travel enough I I I think I need it he does he drives an hour and a half into work every single day and he's always the first one in kudos to him and when he first started working for me I he didn't even tell me this he would show up and rent a hotel room remember when we were snow plowing yeah my first season yeah yeah and I'm like what how do you get here before everybody what what do you mean you're 30 minutes before everybody well I just jumped out got here from the hotel I'm like I didn't even know it so then I set up a room in the house so if he's going to be putting in a long day winter or summer I don't want him driving an hour and a half back he's got five kids he pops them out like popcorn so I want him to be safe so the wife and I set up a room in the basement uh so he doesn't have to do the traveling but he's got more traveling to do and I've got less talking to do I'm going to give the camera to him you're heading to Magnuson when we come back we're going to reconvene put our straw blanket down plant that slope get this area set up saw it staple it six-way Staples I'm just going to staple it until you run out of Staples and then you're going to go buy more Staples but you get them at Magnuson so you might want to grab a cart in a staple I we still got like a th000 case from the last time I don't think we even went through a 10 perfect see if I'm not back by the time you're back which I should be we have to rake this out before we start sing all right just so you know yeah it's raking so it's at least fluffed up again level out the yeah all your dog prints yeah my dog prints from those two freaking Frack ying and yang the teror twins all right so we made it to Magnuson this place is freaking tighter than tight my whole yard could fit in this place picking up a order for dirt monkey or Stan or I don't know what you put it under charger uh for it's like a pallet or so going say either it's on file or something all right I just have yeah every type of shovel and Tool you could think of hopefully we can fit one full pallet and 26 rolls on the back of this truck cuz Stan was like no you don't need to bring the trailer place is too tight yeah it's a tight place I probably would have been able to fit I would have probably been waiting behind some other cars but Le I would have been able to get it all in one load I guarantee you I could have fit that entire load in but NOP Zach couldn't do it he had to take two trips which is fine I'd rather have him be safe than sorry and complain and then have him go down the road and have an accident and go what you did I could do it so he did use better judgment your call has been forwarded to voicemail the person you're trying to reach is not available at the tone please record your message when you have finished recording never get a hold of you ever can we that's because some of us are busy working and not talking on the phone Zach talks so much nobody even has to be around and he'll be talking we got it stra down yeah it's all I had for straps thought I had more on board but we've been moving a lot of stuff the last couple of days so everything got yeah this place is busy nuts and hopefully I can make it back and not lose anything and this place is nut so here I wish I would have brought the trailer cuz it is just nuts here Magnus is nuts it's crazy it's tight it's busy and I didn't want Zach's first time being there being with a trailer and getting box down Bumper to Bumper everybody here you got crazy civilians like this dude here and hopefully we make a back stand and I got to come back for another pallet cuz again didn't bring the trailer and 27 ain't going to fit on here if we had no toolbox and bulk tank sure to get those extra side rolls on that's when you start stuffing your truck like a burrito in every nook and cranny but yeah we're off all right so we got back with the first load got offloaded and we're going to get that one put inside so that way Frankie can get doing stuff so Frankie is 63 years old and still one of the hardest workers in our entire company the only people that can keep up with Frankie are Alex Tim me and Zach if I yell at him enough [Music] oh typical Frankie style Zach went ran to get the second pallet aside and he's already got this all laid out which is awesome I got this cut in and I got to run and get the quick grass Turf establishment blanket cuz I forgot it here's some of the stuff I did pick up from giron we're going to be placing this popping some of this stuff in and then uh we're going to head to girton and grab the quick grass Turf establishment blanket right now all right guys this is gtens definitely not the cheapest place in the city is to get your materials that you need but also definitely the best place with the widest uh selection variety of different types of stuff specialty stuff that you may need this is just their Brickyard down over there is their Wholesale Nursery and then on the other side of the road is their Retail Nursery this place is absolutely massive so it gets super busy in here just because it's a One-Stop shop convenience you pay for convenience but you're paying more than you would at one of the smaller shops or one of the other places that you could go to get stuff but I tell you if you need it girton has it and you will pay a little bit more than you would other places for it but hey you know what it is what it is I'm going to sneak through sneaking through boys let's see I got double-sided they call it straw blanket I think it's right there I if I knew it was only 8T I wouldn't have Bo bothered with the trailer I thought they were 12 foot rolls is this mine didn't need a trailer for that blah blah blah blah blah blah blah but that's what I get for thinking all right let's get her back and get that landcaping done it's already noon and real quick this is not a plug for Gertens here's their retail side I'm just showing you the reason I say it's not a plug for girton is because I pay the same exorbitant prices that everybody space but this place is just insane just the value of the real estate in inber Gro Heights how much land they have is insane this this business is worth a lot of money when he's done making Buu Buck selling green plants to green thumbs he'll just sell the land to a developer and him and three of the next three generations of his family will retire guys let's take a quick peek at what this is and what makes it work so well so this is a double-sided straw blanket and it's got straw inter oven and then you can see it's got this fine netting and what that does perfect for seating especially you have to staple this to the soil and it creates that bedding environment retains the moisture and allows the plants to just start to pop underneath it versus and it controls erosion so this whole thing doesn't just get laid in now I've got to go through and zing zing zing zing zing zing staple it in so that it's secure to the slope but it really helps it's not a per it's not a guarantee that it'll stop erosion but it does help out a lot I add some up there some there then we can start the plantings just putting it in place don't count it's got to be stapled and this is called a sod staple it's meant to staple sod to the ground when you're putting sod on slopes or you need to put sod for some other reason but this stuff needs to be stapled everything 3 Square ft or tighter or it just don't count the first rain you got is going to wash it down some of you guys may be asking is it better to lay it this way or this way it's better to lay it this way I got lazy and I did it this way you can do it this way requires more of these things okay so we're doing the pl plantings through the quick grass surface as blanket or straw blanket um and it's okay to put the dirt on top in this situation now every Situation's going to vary but in my yard I want the dirt on top that's going to help staple and get this straw blank blanket to incorporate right back in and yeah when it rains and it's going to pour rain tonight it's going to wash some of this stuff down but it's going to wash the dirt through and into the straw matting it's going to incorporate that straw blanket deeper into the slope we've got animals here we've got cats we've got dogs we've got Birds we've got Zach we've got every kind of creature that you can possibly imagine even the Frankfurter is up there and he walks on this so the more that this matting this netting is incorporated down into the slope the better that that's going to stitch that slope together so I've got zero issue just by putting it in especially on the edges around the edges it's great to put that in the on the edges in this situation just use your common sense for whatever you're doing I was sitting in the office of a big contractor I mean this guy did 10 20 30 50 hundred million doll projects massive projects and simple white sign said how do you eat an elephant and big black letters I'm going what the heck does that even mean so it just made me Ponder how do you eat an elephant and then was one bite at a time so when this guy was tackling massive projects he would just calm down and say you eat an elephant one bite at a time and that's what we did today we basically got through we got this side done we've got a finished planting we're not completely wrapped up I got a jack Pine here I got to figure out where that goes I got to get some snow on the mountain transplanted from the front to the back cover up that slope I've got to do some probably more snow on the mountain or something in here then we've got to do all the landscaping around the outside of the pond get that in and we're trying to work our way inside out so that's what I'm talking about one bite at a time but that's it for this project for today one bite at a time how do you eat an elephant so I won't worry about a lot of this stuff today there's always tomorrow or next week but that's it for this one I hope whenever you're watching this video you guys it's awesome for you I hope things are good on your end of the world and uh you have uh people you can share it with and good times cuz we only got so many minutes so many hours so many days there's no need to fret and worry about what happens tomorrow just do the best you can today that's all we've got for you on this one God bless go get him you guys and we'll catch you on another one I think it's time to take a shower those junipers make me itch I am just breaking out in hives see you on the next one you guys God bless oh wait you guys are still here well let me give you a quick tour and an update all right you guys first off thank you for joining me on Pond week it has been a couple weeks since we finished up all of the finished Landscaping so I'll just give you a quick overview and but we are not done even close yet uh I still got to figure out what the heck to do here I hate this area right here so that's going to get changed I have attempted to put the plants in but freaking Frack my two German Shepherds really do enjoy tearing everything out that I plant so all of these have been uprooted by them and moved um down here in the lower pond it's been a couple weeks and it does take a bit for the clarity to come in and so the water Clarity is finally started you can actually start to see down to the bottom of the pond and let's go and see exactly how well our turf establishment blanket has been holding up I got my buddies they follow me everywhere I go and here's the slope that we reestablished and we've had just constant rain and this slope has not I I haven't lost anything I I don't have any cracks I don't have any crevices I don't have any divets this slope is held up like a champ and this the secret is that Turf establishment blanket now the plants on the other hand some of them don't like the transplant process but the slope itself the dirt which is what I'm concerned about seems to be doing pretty good and we're not even close to being done we've got so much more to do around here it'll be a work in progress and Ever Changing but I'll give you my two cents here my unbiased two cents um I think if you were going to do any Landscaping in your backyard a pond is probably the top thing if you want to just get out and enjoy your yard I've watched for the last 3 weeks and yesterday I caught my wife sitting out on a stone in the middle of the pond my Sun comes out here every single day feeds the fish my grandkids have been over more in the last 3 weeks fishing in my pond they're in there with Nets they're not fishing with hooks they're in there with Nets trying to catch everything um it's just I mean it is interactive it's mesmerizing if you can bite the bullet and put in a pond I would 100% say go for it it is better than a patio better better than a wall better than almost any other Landscaping that I've done just for what it brings to your property but more importantly what it brings to your life and what I mean is you will notice that that pond is like a magnet it will draw you in it will draw other people in and since this is my first time ever living with the Pond I'm realizing these things and just sharing them with you uh but thank you again for joining me on Pond week that's going to wrap this one up God bless you guys and go get them I'll see you later
