Pergola Over A Patio - The Kind That WILL NEVER Blow Away!
What happens here
Use a handheld electric planer to carefully shave a small amount of wood off the exterior faces of the pressure-treated posts. This is a critical step to ensure that when the 5.5-inch dark slate composite boards are installed, they align perfectly and create the desired 1/8-inch overhang over the 7.25-inch structural elements. Once the posts are planed to the correct dimension, attach the dark slate composite boards vertically to the sides of each pergola post using a drill/driver and appropriate outdoor-grade screws. Ensure screws are evenly spaced and driven flush with the board surface for a clean, finished appearance.
Goal: Shave down the exterior faces of the pressure-treated posts slightly to ensure a flush fit and 1/8-inch overhang for the decorative dark slate composite boards, then securely attach these boards to the posts.
