PART 1: How to build a 2-tier retaining wall. #hardscape #retainingwall #howto

What happens here

The final step in this part involves adding a layer of foundation stone (typically crushed gravel or aggregate) into the trench, over the geotextile fabric. This stone layer provides a level, permeable, and load-bearing base for the retaining wall blocks. Once spread and leveled with a rake and shovel, this stone must also be thoroughly compacted using a mechanical compactor to ensure maximum density and stability, similar to the subgrade compaction. Use a level to ensure the stone layer is perfectly flat.

Goal: Create a solid, compacted, and free-draining stone base for the wall blocks.

Tools and materials

  • Foundation Stone — Creating the stable base for the retaining wall
  • Level — Ensuring the stone layer is perfectly flat and level
  • Mechanical Compactor — Compacting the foundation stone
  • Rake — Leveling the foundation stone
  • Shovel — Spreading the foundation stone
