Painting Perfect Lines. Laser Straight Lines on Brick!

this chris idaho painter here on paint live tv today i'm at a job site and i'm doing a metallic stripe so i'm doing a metallic stripe on brick which is a very porous or got lots of holes lots of crooked lines so i'm going to give you a or some tips and tricks painting a metallic stripe on brick so stay tuned for this video all right now i'm working on this metallic stripe i started down there i'm heading down this way some tips and tricks when it comes to doing a stripe on a wall one thing is very critical is using frog tape and frog tape i've got multiple types of frog tape right here but i'll show you the one i'm using today i'm using frog tape blue and frog tape blue is production um frog tape that's exact is exact same is the frog tape green which has a polymer that swells on the edges of the tape so it doesn't allow any liquid or paint to bleed underneath the tape giving you laser straight lines frog tape green comes individually packed frog tape blue is their contractor packet or not production tape but it's a contractor packed in four packs not individually packed and it's not a premium paper so it's less expensive than frog tape green and it's great for something like this frog tape orange is production frog tape it's a lot cheaper than the other two it doesn't have a polymer that swells us so paint and liquids could leak underneath it so on something like this if you wanted to get a laser straight line you're probably going to have to caulk your tape and i have tips and tricks on how to caulk tape on another video i'm using frog tape blue with a very thick product this is a metallic coating and you can see how thick this coating is and it doesn't have a tendency to bleed underneath your tape so far i've gotten laser straight lines on this uh brick right here which is a rough bumpy surface and it's working out really well so frog tape blue and is what i'm using i'm also using to so i don't have to hold on to my tape so i can do this as i go getting up the ladder only one time i've got a tough gap that i'm using to hold my tape right here so the tough gap just holds my tape so i don't have to have it on my wrist or in my mouth so i'm just taping doing my first coat as i go and then i'm going to come back and do my second coat i'm going to leave the tape on allow it to dry put my second coat and then pull my tape and this product doesn't bridge so it's a metallic coating that is kind of like a flat paint so it doesn't bridge it's not going to peel it off from tape to your wall so you don't have to worry about that bridging effect so you can actually do two coats right over the top of your tape i'm using inch and half tape that way one inch tape you know if you're not really careful you could get it onto your wall i just painted these walls this is my undercoat and so i've got enough to touch it up if i did get some on but i'm using inch and a half tape to run my lines so here we go i'm going to show you what it looks like to tape and paint as we go i've got a pail hook that way i don't have to get down off my ladder i can have my tape my paint and just cruise right along now i'm going to start masking my line and this is your critical part is getting you a straight line so i'm staying right at the bottom of my bricks here is what i'm doing and i'm just pulling my tape pulling it tight pressing with two fingers i want to press down really tight rub back across it one more time i'm going to mask my upper line if you don't get it straight just pull your tape and redo it just gonna run my fingers over that tape one more time and i'll begin applying my my metallic finish now if anything is not straight i could go back over it and straighten it up if i needed to right over the top of that tape just like that now if you're using the caulking your tape method where you're using production tape and caulking your tape that's going to leave a bigger dam on the edge when you actually pull your tape if you're doing it like on a smooth wall or interior walls or something and you repainted the room didn't want the stripe anymore you're going to see that dam and that dam is the the edge of your line uh to your wall so that the paint's gonna be thicker here so there's gonna be an edge it's gonna drop off and that's what we call a dam so now i'm gonna be applying my metallic coating and i'm putting it on in a random roll effect this is bow arrow metallic coatings and i have a lot of pinholes and stuff so i got to really rub it in to get it down in those holes once i get it all covered then i'm going to random roll it you want to come down to your tape just press it up against your tape and this coating being as thick as it is you don't have to worry about pressing it underneath your tape if you're using just regular wall paint even though you're using frog tape the pressing of the coating up against that tape could cause it to bleed underneath this metallic stripe i've got half this wall already done and it's already dry it absolutely looks amazing this is a boerrow metallic suede and there's a lot of different ways you can apply it but i'm using a random roll effect with a microfiber mini roller this is a 3 8 inch roller that i'm using here and i'm going back and forth over because right here unlike a lot of the other part of this wall it's the the stripe down there the holes weren't as deep as they are back here so i have to really press it down in there to fill in these holes otherwise we'll see the gray holes and i'll show you once i get this in i'll show you the random rolling and this is um this metallic suede to get it to look really good it does definitely takes two coats so i've got this all applied now i'm just going to start go back over it random roll it and this is going to give it that metallic suede look which looks amazing if you're on a smooth wall you don't get the whole suede effect on the brick here but you still get like a metallic effect that has shines at different angles different way and different lighting so now it's random rolled i'm just going to move on down here and do it again but doing a stripe getting your keys to doing a stripe is using the right tape and also if you want to have your line completely straight you can chalk a line or use a laser to shoot a line onto the wall here i got the luxury of having the bricks in line i'm just following the grout line or mortar line of the brick and then we'll jump down mass some more go again it's again i'm using a pail hook that way i can just keep my bucket with me i actually set my tape on the thing didn't have it on my tough gaff the key to this not getting anything leading underneath is pressing with your fingers you want to get get your tape stretched and then press it with your fingers and i'm running three fingers right over the top of that tape press it nice and tight now i'm going to meet up my next line go right up to it and i don't want it i want it to meet my tape perfectly that way i don't have like it jog up and down there so it's now because i'm having to press really hard on this block my roller's not even rolling but i'm just getting it um pressing it down trying to get it to fill in you can see what that looks like that's all got one code we're going to go back that's going to take about an hour for that to dry and we're going to go back over it with a second coat all right we're back to where we started i'm going to put my second coat on and this is just a really light coat random rolled and you're also just looking for any spots that you might miss the metallic coatings it's when you're applying first coat it's really hard to see where you're going because the light glaring off the metallic finish but second coat is just light random roll okay in particular close to your edges and making sure your edges are covered 100 percent and then i'm going to pull tape as i go as i'm up here so i don't have to come back up the ladder again on this side and we'll just continue right along all right there you have it our stripe is not all done yet but we're just cruising right along completing it hopefully i gave you some tips and tricks on how to get laser straight lines using um frog tape and metallic paint so metallic suede so it's looking really cool we'll show you the final product here shortly if you got any tips or tricks leave
