Apply Drywall Compound

What happens here

Using a putty knife or taping knife, apply a thin, even layer of all-purpose drywall compound (also known as joint compound or 'mud') over the newly installed drywall patch. Ensure the compound extends slightly onto the surrounding existing wall to create a feathered edge. Smooth out the compound as much as possible to minimize the amount of sanding required later. Allow this first layer to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions, which typically takes several hours. After the initial coat is dry, apply a second, slightly wider coat, feathering the edges even further outwards to blend seamlessly with the existing wall. Repeat with a third coat if necessary, widening the feathered edges each time. The ultimate goal is to make the repair imperceptible. The video illustrates the initial application of the compound.
