One of many obstacles you’ll face installing larger scale backyard spaces is working w/easements.

What happens here

Following the plan, dig a trench line in the designated drainage easement. The trench's dimensions (depth and width) will depend on the volume of stormwater expected and local engineering specifications. Ensure the trench is consistently graded with a slight slope towards the connection point to the main storm drain to facilitate gravity flow of water.

Goal: Excavate the path for the French drain with proper grading

Tools and materials

  • Line Level — Checking the slope of the trench bottom
  • Pickaxe — Breaking up compacted soil or small rocks
  • Shovel — Digging the trench and moving excavated soil
  • Wheelbarrow — Transporting excavated soil away from the trench
