What happens here

Although not shown from the very beginning, a critical initial phase of any paver installation is site preparation. This involves excavating the area to remove any existing concrete (as implied by the presenter) or other unwanted materials, and then digging to the required depth for a proper sub-base. A layer of crushed aggregate (typically 6-12 inches of ¾ inch gravel) is laid and thoroughly compacted using a plate compactor to create a stable, non-settling foundation. This is followed by a uniform layer (1-2 inches) of bedding sand (also known as paver sand), which is screeded level to provide a smooth surface for the pavers. The video, starting around 0:10.000, shows pavers already being laid on what appears to be a prepared base, indicating this foundational work has been completed in those sections.

Goal: Create a stable, level, and well-draining sub-base and bedding layer for the paver walkway.

Tools and materials

  • Level — Checking the grade and ensuring levelness of base layers
  • Measuring Tape — Measuring dimensions, layer thickness, and checking alignment
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting the sub-base and bedding layers for stability
  • Screed Boards — Leveling the bedding sand layer evenly
  • Shovel — Excavating soil and spreading aggregates
  • Wheelbarrow — Transporting excavated material and aggregates
  • Bedding Sand — Providing a level surface for pavers and allowing for minor adjustments
  • Crushed Aggregate — Creating the load-bearing and drainage sub-base layer
