Final Base Preparation for Connection and Joint Filling

What happens here
The final segment of the video shows the remaining section of the pathway, where the base has been prepared with gravel and is ready for the final pavers to be laid. A worker is visible, likely performing final leveling or compacting of this section's base, preparing for the last set of pavers that will connect the new front walkway to the existing back patio. Once all pavers are laid and edge restraints are installed throughout the entire walkway, the final crucial step is to sweep polymeric sand into all the paver joints. This sand is then compacted into the joints using a plate compactor (often with a protective pad to prevent scuffing the pavers). Finally, the surface is lightly misted with water to activate the polymers in the sand, causing it to harden and lock the pavers together, creating a durable, weed-resistant, and aesthetically finished walkway.
Goal: Complete the paver installation by preparing the final base section, connecting the walkway, and stabilizing all joints with polymeric sand.
Tools and materials
- Compactor Mat — Protecting paver surfaces from scuffing during final compaction
- Garden Hose with Fine Mist Nozzle — Lightly misting the polymeric sand to activate its hardening properties
- Plate Compactor — Final compaction to settle pavers and polymeric sand into joints
- Stiff Bristle Broom — Sweeping polymeric sand into paver joints
- Polymeric Sand — Filling and hardening the joints between pavers to lock them in place and deter weeds
