Not too shabby for a couple days of work!!

What happens here

Once the main frame is complete, the deck joists are installed. These are smaller pieces of pressure-treated lumber that span between the ledger board and the outer rim joist or between beams. Workers are seen placing these joists at regular intervals (typically 12 or 16 inches on center) and securing them with structural screws, nails, or joist hangers. This creates the subfloor structure that will directly support the decking boards. Proper spacing and secure fastening are critical for the deck's load-bearing capacity and rigidity.

Goal: Create the subfloor structure for the decking boards

Tools and materials

  • Impact Driver — Securing joists with structural screws or driving nails into joist hangers
  • Joist Hangers — Providing strong connections between joists and beams/ledgers
  • Measuring Tape — Accurately spacing joists
  • Pressure-Treated Lumber — Creating the subfloor structure
  • Structural Screws / Nails — Fastening joists to the frame
