What happens here

This project details the process of diagnosing and replacing a faulty thermostatic mixing valve, which was causing a soaker tub to not receive warm water. It covers troubleshooting steps, identifying the correct replacement part, shutting off the main water supply, carefully removing the old valve, installing the new one, and restoring water service, resulting in a fully functional hot water supply to the bathtub. An additional sink drain repair is also included.

Hey folks, that fixing guy here, and so we came over to my neighbor's house across the street, said he had an issue with his bathtub. So we've got here as a soaker tub that is not getting warm water anymore. All right, so I'll walk you through the trouble shooting, I'm gonna walk you through the repair. So come along, let's get to fixing. Okay, so first thing I did was turn on the hot water and just feel, and it actually is kind of cool. He has a tankless water heater and the tankless water heater is set at 120. All right, so I ended up buying this thermal pro for some suspect chicken, but it turns out that I've just kind of put this in my bag and started using it. So I'm probably gonna have to get my wife another one. Oh, and we're only getting 91 out of the bathtub. So then I came over to his bathroom sink, 114, that's good. So I started looking around and I found that under the sink here is a thermostatic mixing valve. All right, well my first thing was to let's turn this counterclockwise and actually see if it'll go up more and there actually was a lot of movement on it. So I thought, well, that could be it. So with this, the hot side feeds in from the left, the cold side feeds in the right and the pipe that goes down feeds the hot side of the tub. And after several minutes, there really was not much change. So I said, hey, dude, you need to get one of these. I said them this picture, half inch sweat ins. It's actually what's on there. So we've got a new thermostatic mixing valve right here. It does come with new unions. We won't use those, but we probably will pop in these new washers. And we're gonna check those washers. How maybe this thing is dirty? Maybe it got dumped up and that's why it's not working as good as it should. You don't touch this. It's going to usually come set at 115 to 120. Okay, don't have to mess with that at all. There actually is a little thing. You can remove this cap and I'll show you in a minute to turn it up higher if you needed to. So once we shut the water down, all we're going to have to do is undo these unions right here and hook that up. Okay, when we go down to shut the water off, we'll actually drain a sink down below. We'll get all the hot and cold out of this. Make it super easy for ourselves. And this is going to be pretty quick. It would be nice if there was shut off valves right there and you could make this a super quick change out. But you know what? Doing a couple stairs and going to hurt nobody, especially me at this point. So we got to go to the closet under the stairs for this one. All right, they put the shut off valves and the weirdest place is sometimes right down here is where it is. It always makes me laugh. We will open the hot and cold down low, get some of that draining. That way we don't get a bunch of water upstairs, opening upstairs faucet. Oh yeah, use a backup wrench for this, right? All this pecs pipe is going to be a little bit foxy, but that is super easy. There we go. So just a little pressure off of that and then these are going to be able to pop right on out of there. Okay, interesting. Just plastic washers. That'd be fine. So it is cash-acme. Same thing, a little bit different of a design, different washers. All right, and I'm going to go ahead and put these rubber ones in with the screens. Just so we don't get anything on the inlet and outlet and hot side hot cold side cold. So this does get flipped this way. Okay, we're not going to mess with this knob. I want to see if it actually is set accurately when it comes. And then I will pop this one apart and actually show you how to get hotter than 120 water if you need to. Okay, or if you want to, right? This is nice for anti-scold feature for the kids, right? The kids mainly use the jacuzzi tub. Just slowly open the water. I like to just get it started. Close the bottom. Got full pressure. Now we just have to go and open the valve the rest of the way. There's no resistance on this valve left because the house is pressurized. And we just open it up and then close it by a quarter of a turn. That way it doesn't stick in the open position. So now we just crank the tub on. So now we're actually getting the same water as the house. Okay, that's awesome. The factory setting on that bad boy, we're looking at about 114, 115, which is fine. And these being at 115, this is actually as high as that is right now. So if he needs to turn it down for the kids, he can. Okay, say you're looking for some hotter water. Well, you pop this screw right here off. And you open this up and you see all those notches right there. This is actually a scold guard. So you could take this little limit stop right here. You could take it above that. You could spin it and then drop it back down. And you could see right here hot more this way, cold more this way. And that will allow you to get it a little bit hotter. Some people like to take a hot bath. I mean, why do you have such a big tub? I don't know. All right, while we're under here, I notice something too. We have got, we've got this triple lever arm right here that is not hooked up. Okay, it's all kinds of wonky here. That there there. There we go. And now you have to have the right measurement for this right here to work, right? So then you just want to take some channel locks or something right here on this nut. You want to get that nice and snug down. And now you're going to be able to have some movement. That ain't going anywhere. Good to go. Nice. And now the sink fills and drains again. I really hope showing you this thermostatic mixing valve change out helped out in some way. If you had one of these, look around. You never know. My friend didn't know we had one, right? But it turns out that that was the mixing valve for this big old soaker tub. And so with that, wasn't getting enough hot water. Hook that up. Now we're back in the hot water game and he got the same fix too. I really hope you folks are enjoying the videos. If you can please subscribe. Click that like button.
