Install and Compact Base Layers

What happens here
After excavation, install the sub-base and bedding layer. First, lay down a geotextile fabric (optional but recommended) to prevent weeds and mixing of soil with the base material. Then, spread a layer of crushed gravel (e.g., 3/4-inch crushed stone or road base), typically 4-6 inches deep, compacting it thoroughly with a plate compactor. This forms the primary drainage and load-bearing layer. On top of the gravel, spread a uniform layer of fine sand or paver base material (about 1 inch thick). This bedding layer allows for easy leveling of the slabs. The video shows workers on a similar base material, likely in the finishing stages of this step around newly laid slabs.
Goal: Create a stable and level foundation for the slabs
Tools and materials
- Level — Checking the slope and evenness of the base layers
- Plate Compactor — Compacting the gravel sub-base and bedding layer
- Rake — Spreading gravel and sand evenly
- Screed Board — Leveling the sand bedding layer precisely
- Wheelbarrow — Transporting base materials to the work area
- Crushed Gravel — Creating the stable sub-base for drainage and load bearing
- Geotextile Fabric — Preventing weed growth and mixing of soil with base materials
- Paver Sand — Providing a leveling and bedding layer for the slabs
