What happens here

Once all slabs are laid and leveled, it's time to finish the joints and secure the edges. For joint filling, sweep polymeric sand into the gaps between the slabs. This sand hardens when moistened, locking the slabs in place and inhibiting weed growth. Ensure the sand completely fills the joints. For the walkway and patio edges, install edge restraints (e.g., plastic or metal edging) to prevent the slabs from shifting outwards over time. The video shows some workers seemingly finishing the edges with soil, which would happen after edge restraints are installed or where natural edges are desired, and some minor cleanup of the base material.

Goal: Stabilize slabs and prevent weed growth

Tools and materials

  • Garden Hose with Fine Spray Nozzle — Gently misting the polymeric sand to activate its hardening properties
  • Hammer — Driving spikes to secure edge restraints
  • Leaf Blower — Removing excess polymeric sand from slab surfaces before watering
  • Stiff Bristle Broom — Sweeping polymeric sand into the slab joints
  • Utility Knife — Cutting plastic edge restraints to size
  • Edge Restraints — Preventing the outer slabs from shifting or separating
  • Polymeric Sand — Filling joints to lock slabs in place, prevent weed growth, and deter insects
  • Spikes — Securing the edge restraints to the ground
