What happens here
The final and most crucial step for waterproofing is to install the roof flashing and boot. First, slide a pre-formed metal roof flashing around the base of the post anchor sleeve. This flashing should be installed using a 'shingle over shingle' method: the top edge of the flashing slides under the shingles above it, and the bottom edge overlaps the shingles below it. Then, carefully slide a rubber pipe flashing (commonly called a roof boot or pipe boot) over the post anchor sleeve. Ensure the boot fits snugly around the sleeve and lays flat against the metal flashing and surrounding shingles. Secure the metal flashing and the base of the rubber boot with roofing nails, placing them where they will be covered by the next course of shingles. Finally, apply a generous bead of roofing cement or sealant around all exposed edges of the flashing and the base of the rubber boot to ensure a completely watertight seal.
Goal: Ensure watertight seal for the roof penetration
Tools and materials
- Caulk Gun — Applying roofing cement
- Pre-formed Metal Roof Flashing — Directing water away from the roof penetration
- Roofing Cement/Sealant — Sealing all exposed edges for waterproofing
- Roofing Hammer — Driving roofing nails
- Roofing Nails — Securing flashing and boot
- Rubber Pipe Flashing — Sealing around the post anchor sleeve
