What happens here
This DIY project provides a detailed guide on how to clean and maintain a Honeywell F50E1182 Electronic Air Cleaner (EAC) filter system. The process involves safely powering down the unit, removing the pre-filters and electrostatic collector cells, thoroughly cleaning them with compressed air, and then reinstalling and reactivating the system, including resetting the filter usage indicator on the thermostat. The video also discusses the merits and maintenance frequency of such systems, noting the absence of post-filters in this particular setup.

(7,052 characters)hey folks that fix it guy here and today we're going to be not changing out my filters but cleaning my filters on my furnace right so i have this weird honeywell style air cleaner on my furnace instead of filters and with this style you actually clean it instead of change them out every three months so i wanted to get some advice and see what everybody's saying about these things see if i need to stay away all i know is that my last furnace had it on for 20 plus years so come along let's get to fixing [Music] [Applause] all right so we're at the thermostat you can see that this says change filter we're going to come over here wherever your office we're going to click this in the off we don't want it coming on we're actually doing something with our filter okay so if you come up here and you push this test button that indicates to me that this thing is actually working right we'll come over here you can see it's a it's tight quarters how this was built in here and this is the on off switch click that to off and now we'll be able to pop this thing out and i'll show you what i got going on so we'll take this right here and you just pull it out straight forward and then this little panel right here comes off and then there's two of these filters right here and then one more those other little suitcase type setups here i don't really know what you call this but it's got a bunch of fins and looks like little wires in it all right so i've got my little bostitch pancake compressor here with an air fitting and we're just gonna go ahead and we're gonna blow all the dirt out of these we're gonna get these things all cleaned up and get them put back in okay so these bad boys they are decently cleaned at this point right they look really well i mean are these things as clean as a brand new pleated filter no they're not but they are cleaned pretty well in my opinion okay so on the back of the cover is actually a troubleshooting plate from honeywell this is electronic cleaner right type f50e1182 all right and it actually just gives you some steps you go through if something's not right with it but most part it seems to work all right so here we go we got some handles on these things you've got this arrow right here that says airflow right you've got this on both of these there's two of these and this is essentially just a a bunch of louvers i guess that just will catch a ton of stuff right and we got we got this very clean well if you look on the other side there actually are these little wires down in here as well too that i'm assuming connect to the electro part of this thing and actually collect dust and zap it or whatever but i mean you can see i didn't get it a hundred hundred percent clean right there's still a little bit of dust on there but i did what i could i mean there's a little bit of plastic on here for the most part this these things are all metal construction now these little pre-filters right here you can see it's just wire i mean these are like i think any other kind of washable type filter it says that you could wash these in water they don't recommend detergent or soap or anything and personally i just like air blowing them out i don't want to scrub them i'm not trying to vacuum them i just am going to blow them out and hopefully try to keep them the same way they are for as long as possible all right and then i just was looking inside this thing because it's i was looking this up and it said that there was post filters as well but i actually didn't see anything on those so they're not in there so we might have to order some more of these or some different kind and get a post filter but what do you guys think i was looking on the website it said depending on your lifestyle and pets and kids and everything you have if you're a smoker whatever you want to clean these every one to six months so that's a wide gap i'm kind of shooting the middle this time was a little bit longer than three months just because you know you got a lot of stuff going on i kind of put things on the back burner sometimes so this was about four months worth of build up here and it could have been a little bit more you know i will mark my calendar in at the three month mark next time we'll check this and then we kind of will be able to compare and just see how bad it was i don't think i wanted to get this bad again so we'll get that that way right there get this one right here okay got the pre-filter hooked up now with these right here airflow going down right sucking up from there coming down and through here and then going out the bottom so just make sure those are down you can't really mess this up all right because this side right here actually is going to connect over on this far side with the electricity all right and you see that that other side is completely bare so we'll get this popped in here something that i just learned and kind of sucks is that right down here is supposed to be a whole nother set of filters right there's actually another slot this post filter slot and i need something for there so we're going to get something ordered all right but for right now and i guess that's the way it's been for the whole time for as long as i've had it and i'm sure longer because that's what people do but then you just take this there's a little tab right here that this little slot falls into that just pushes in place click that switch on test button we hear that the tech tech tech tac static is working again good to go okay so the last thing we got to do is get that change filter off here so we'll go to menu hit scroll go to filter usage hit ok filter count hit next reset okay bam there we go all right folks what does everybody think of the honeywell air cleaner right that electronic filtration system i don't know 100 what is going on with this thing but i wonder if people still install these are installers out there actually putting these things in for customers i read some reviews on amazon where customers have installed a newer style of this and they really seem to like them it's got a lot of positive reviews definitely got some negatives but there are some positives on them you know i talked with my hvac friend he said personally he would rip it out and he would put just regular filters in there that you could change every three months man i am just a person that it seems like it's such a crazy amount of money being thrown into filters all the time that i actually like this i don't mind coming and cleaning these out i am gonna get some other ones for the post filter slots there of course there wasn't any in there because that's the way this house has been since day one but i really leave me some comments leave me some feedback tell me what you guys think tell me what you guys have i really would appreciate it thank you very much i really hope you guys are enjoying the videos i keep trying to post put stuff out and you know just ask questions and help people out where we can alright thank you very much and we'll see you again real soon
