What happens here

This project details the process of replacing old house siding with new fiber cement siding. It includes removing old siding, clearing the work area of vegetation and concrete obstructions, applying house wrap and flashing for weather protection, and finally installing the new composite siding panels and trim.

with the roof completely done and the garage is fully set up that is now a fully functioning dream shop of mine that I could never have imagined we're ready to start moving on to the big reveal and by reveal I mean we're going to start working on curb appeal we have this old 65 year old siding that's original still on here it looks terrible I would like to find matching kind of siding but the problem is is it's chipping away so much and on top of it I can't find a perfect match for so we have to give it a brand new modern sighting that'll actually make it last a lot longer this is a terrible functioning setup this is the bathroom window there's no curb appeal to the front door there has to be something grandiose here to make it pop from the street we'll figure that part out but first we need to do is start ripping out this old siding which again lucky me Triple digits for the next four days so let's lose some body weight now most sidings are installed bottom up so they overlap so water Rains Down on so removing it I imagine we have to go top down we'll see if I can get away from not cutting any caulk out here [Music] this out it used to be like a a teal house oh that's wild very uh Tiffany and koas got to bring my hedge trimmer too I make my life easier to get behind here oh look what I found here yeah when I say it's an abandoned house it is an abandoned it's freaking house [Music] should we go to an antique shop [Music] what's up [Music] it appears to me that this little concrete planter this little brick planter was placed after the house was built because the siding conveniently runs through the back another project having to demolish this planter [Music] so through my recent discovery check what I found this is the old AC unit definitely out of dated I don't know if it works or not but here's the fun part it's not even strapped in supposed to be anchored to this concrete pad it's just sitting there so you know you just pick it up and walk away with it son of a gun went right through my sneaker nail went through my boot the legs all cut up and scratched up by the weeds 100 degree weather it's only been an hour I'm sweating like a pig through this Brim unloading this clip on them [Music] oh there's no sheeting on this this is just straight up siding on it while the front of the house had it and this side has it here so I don't know what's going on there something happened here that he had to cut it out it was a window I wonder if the kitchen was here and then they extended this out I said I wonder happened it's so hard to figure out what was the existing structure and what was added on because it's confirmed that the old paint it was this teal color which is kind of cool retro I'd love to see what the house looked like like that back in the 60s and the second of all there's a window that was placed there that was not cheated up and then carbon paper is here but no carbon paper over there over this door slide what was added on what was the existing structure I don't know I thought the house was the only the garage was the only problem I guess the house too a little bit guys we're gonna take a quick break from taking care of the siding on this house and talk to you about uh sponsors of today's video rainpoint I'm really excited about this product from rainpoint it's their raincoin plus Garden watering system and the reason I'm excited about this product is because the backyard I've been meaning to put some Greenery some some bushes some plants in that corner but I don't have any irrigation connected to it so I have to dig up all this rock dig up canals in this grass put all this line to connect to my irrigation and that is not something I want to do well that's where we're rainpoint plus water guarding system comes in place this is a fantastic product that if you do want to have a garden that needs to be watered and you don't have any irrigation there or you need your lawn your backyard your front yard to be watered this is the product for it look how easy it works simply connect your two Zone watering timer to your outdoor faucet then get the lines that you need to be watered one will be for our lawn and one will be for our future plans then after pairing the device to our homeguard app we're able to control and set schedules for our two Zone watering to take place so for example I could come into my left sprinkler that is my lawn and I could set my schedule accordingly have a plan in place set even rain delay and if it rains you can delay it for 24 48 or 72 hours which makes irrigation way more efficient and of course the same goes for my second Zone The Ride Zone and that is going towards where our plants are going to be I could set the same schedule there it doesn't need as much water as my lawn which will make it perfect opportunity to do appropriate irrigation and what's cooler than that for the plants I could switch my mode from irrigation to Simply a Mist mode and set the time that I'd like it to run for and it'll give me the Mist that will not use too much hard water switching it and it will give me the amount of water that's actually using in liters and the repo it comes with a display Hub that has all of your devices hooked up to it that will show you your gardening and watering plan with the amount of water that's used so you have to waste a single drop not to mention has a bunch of Handy stuff like today's forecast the temperature the temperature that is inside outside the humidity the time the date all this handy stuff that helps you stay inside while making sure all of your systems are operating smoothly rainpoint Smart Plus Garden watering system also comes with a flow meter that gives you the exact amount in gallons or other metrics to how much water to fill up your hot tub maybe your pool take it camping with your RV or any other applications like Watering your lawn or your delicate plants making sure not a single drop of water is wasted rainbow is offering a special discount to the viewers of this channel when you head to rainpointonline.com or simply click the link in the description below use my the siding [Music] this has no quit in him I already brushed him off five times off the siding and it just keeps coming right back on within minutes go find something else to do dude foreign hiding in the siding right over there [Music] I feel like I'm pulling on the window too okay so take the bottom piece off first and then pry it pry the sides from the bottom it's like they were nailed I could see them they were nailed through this trim the windows were nailed through the trim can I just catch a break oh look how rotten this is look at that [Music] no way now this is how it should be coming off that's how it should be coming off [Music] so the nice thing about redoing all this trim as well and I know you guys are going to say oh you should redo the windows it's not in the budget so buy my merch so I could buy new windows but you're supposed to have with modern day code waterproofing tape going around the perimeter of the window so you have carbon paper and then waterproofing and nothing gets in this doesn't have it this is pre that invention so the nice thing is we'll put it on foreign [Music] look at this this is a window this is a window this is a pane of glass that's sitting on top it's secured by little trim pieces somebody's made up a window so now I have to figure out either to block this off keep these two windows or block the entire thing off because you don't need really windows in the kitchen but then I'm sure keyboard Warriors are going to be like well it'll be nice to look outside so or figure out a way to put one giant window which means more money spent all right all the siding is officially off uh this part over here we're going to cover this OSB because I need to make a better transition I looked up can I keep the original uh tar paper and then put you know house wrap over it and what everybody's saying is you can as long as the existing to our paper is in good condition meaning it's not wet because if it's wet and there's Tyvek over it or house wrap it's not going to breathe through so with that being in mind we're gonna go get our house wrap get our cap nails because they're going to be far stronger than Staples and start wrapping the sucker [Music] the advantages of having a nice long house wrap is that you don't have to layer it the disadvantage is when you have a short house like this you gotta finagle it so I'm not going to house wrap this section yet reason why is this is a bathroom window and I'm gonna get rid of it to create a little bit more curb appeal this is weird you're taking a deuce and then Amazon package shows up like Tim says I'm gonna figure out what I'm gonna do there but in the meantime we're going to continue sucker all the way around so the problem we got going on here is the siding the sitting right behind this planter box uh we could possibly I don't think we even get a new setting in there because this is a tapered quarter inch down to a three-quarter inch so I'm gonna have to demo this and I I'm a little sad about demoing because it's kind of nice but I do want to open this up to create more of a concrete slab patio area so it has to go we'll get more arbory and floral stuff here don't worry about it but it would be nice to have a sledgehammer though and safety goggles good thing this guy had 900 random Tools around the yard check out what I just found a secret rock with the secret key in it we'll hide a key perfect [Music] day two of working on this thing we're not messing around with wasps anymore I was gonna say that word but this is a family friendly Network wasp killer we're about to kill these Sons of Guns [Music] so we got the house wrap wrapped up on the house we're ready to start doing the flashing make sure all of our windows are not seeping any water in now I've done a lot of research on this and it kind of does not make sense because if you follow the hierarchy of like Roofing everything has to trickle down and here doesn't make sense to me but what they are saying is here's the steps you have to first use when your window is on raw wood use a waterproofing flashing to run it over this ledge where the nails are and then to the house after that's on you put your drip edge on on top we can't put one here because it's so high up but on the rest of the windows we can and then after that you put your house wrap over that kind of doesn't make sense to me but rules of rules and we're here to follow them [Music] all right so here's the reason why it kind of didn't make sense to me well the drip edge goes on top of this flashing which I kind of get it and I kind of don't because there's still Nails on top of it maybe this stuff will prevent it from leaking through but the second reason it didn't make sense is I'd imagine this tape would be connected to the house wrap and attached to the metal here that makes sense in my head but that's not the order sequence they want us to go by so here we are [Music] if you do happen to run out of tape like I have here in a few radius spots you gotta apply the next piece kind of like you would with roofing shingles right bottom up so water can trickle down if it ever does get in there that's why the bottom tape goes on first and then the side piece is so it could trickle down over it once you learn Roofing I guess you learn flashing it's been a lot easier if I did the windows before putting the Tyvek you got to use the Noggin I didn't do it but you should you only got one might as well use it before it goes away see this is what I mean I would imagine this would be covering everything because yes everything is dripping off the pan not going on the wood with the waterproofing tape but then what happens when it trickles behind here I think what I'm going to do and I don't know if people really do this I'm going to put Tyvek tape over this so this five doesn't come off it's not really waterproof it's supposed to be holding the Tyvek to Tyvek together but it'll give it a little bit added support ah [Music] not a good moment for me right now it's finally siding day deciding has showed up we went with a product called True Wood uh from I think Lowe's we picked it up uh what I like about it it's long so it's wide it's composite board it's 12 inches long so you don't have to do six inch sheets out they'll take forever so these are longer boards I think they're like 20 bucks a sheet or something like that they come in 16 Footers the way they work they they're all the same exact Dimension there's no thickness or thinness so what you do is kind of like shingles on a roof you kind of get out of pitch so it's constantly diverting water and when you started you have to start from the bottom and constantly create that little bevel overlapping about an inch and putting your nails about three quarters to 5 8 of an inch stapling well not stable and you're gonna nail them together because stable's not gonna hold them and then work your way up now the process is really simple but you do have to cut a starter strip from the bottom first the reason why is because if you don't have a starter strip that sucker was gonna lay flat on your wall and it won't continue by cutting about an inch and a half starter strip and putting down below you're now creating that bevel so it can continue all the way up it's not rocket science folks let's nail it in [Music] specifically I haven't used it enough but they gave me instructions they use the manufacturer gave me instruction which is incredible and they're giving you the alignment patterns on nailing patterns and the type of nails make sure they're exterior Nails uh but the product's very simple the only thing really you have to keep in mind is you have to create a gap that's 3 16 on both sides to allow for wood expansion and contraction when you nail it nail them 16 inches on Center make sure hitting the studs and then the only place that you nail below as well are on the ends and the idea behind it you'll have a trim piece running through it and it'll conceal all those nail holes nothing better when they make something dummy please like me [Music] all right I just screwed up tremendously so I cut the next piece that goes here not realizing the seam stops here and you can't do that even though I'll have trim and a little header I you're going to have this void spot here so I'm gonna have to cut a new piece that's long maybe even a full length sheet that way we minimize the amount of seams and that kind of brings me to the next note here is just because these are 16 Footers you can't just willingly stop slapping them on because your transitions are going to be in these weirdest funky places so I kind of have to watch it divide each section in two and then watch your seams foreign [Music] how killer does this look it finally starts looking like a house and not like a box a H well yeah half of a wall but I can only imagine what the rest would look like getting real for me folks [Music] you know siding doesn't suck as much as Roofing I think if I just had a choice to do something for the rest of my life it would uh I probably prefer siding than Roofing it's just all these little Cuts fortunately I don't have any like Outlets or anything out there it's just because it's an old house might pull one later but I'd rather not be on the roof right now oh and speaking of Ruth uh it rained really hard the last two days a whole hurricane Hillary is kind of going through the area and I went inside and double checked our brand new roof that was put on see if there's any leaking went into the the Atticus area and folks we're looking really good we did a damn good job and I'm glad I don't have to worry about any more storms [Music] we got an entire wall done in about probably three and a half hours looks fantastic now we're gonna start working on the front side of the house to get a little more curb appeal finally getting a lot of Headway a lot of the house is getting wrapped one thing you gotta really consider are these Corners because if you stagger them because I've already made that mistake and don't pay attention the lining then when it comes to putting the trim it's going to be a crappy looking job so make sure that you align them going forward mistake that I caught myself doing don't be caught sleeping oh there's my pry bar let's find it yeah but now I still gotta find my blue one [Music] [Applause] so we got ourselves in quite the predicament it's some of these transitions are going to be driving your brain crazy uh this piece needs to go up like that so we could go run under that Eve the problem is that there's going to be a seam on top there that you could either put a trim piece over which will look ugly or you make it 3 16 wide and just caulk it to allow for wood expansion and contraction you either put a seam on top which there's water dripping down or you put a seam down here Below in this little corner and uh I don't know I think that might be my my best case scenario is seen Down Below you kind of have to pick and choose your battles and this is the hill that I'm going to die on all right I think we figured something up we got this under didn't have to do a seam here and the scene that I was concerned about here is non-existent because another piece is going to overlap that by an inch so it's going to perfectly conceal it I love when things work themselves out this section of the roof is a real because I got to figure out all these angles here fortunately it's not a hot day but I wish I paid attention and mass a little bit better [Music] thank you that only took two hours to do it [Music] all right what is an abandoned house project without crap constantly going wrong so apparently he poured this concrete footing or concrete pad and it's touching the concrete footing of the house and that's interfering with our siding I tried notching this out but this is a horrible situation even I cut a good one you're just asking for water start seeping into crap so I'm gonna have to pause here tomorrow bring my SDS hammer drill start breaking off this concrete and that way I can just lay one flat piece across and not have any issues this is stupid I I'm so irritated by this but damn this is dumb all right well I guess we're gonna start on that side [Music] thank you foreign [Music] you guys haven't seen the side of the garage yet have you the well you kind of saw it a little bit but all this trash is this is built right on the property line and you're supposed to have a five foot buffer but here we are instead of a fence and all this junk is here and it's not even my junk but the chair junk I guess one more thing I forgot to mention uh people give you crap about it you have to use primer or anything that you've cut now because we're creating spacings when we come shooting painting the house I'm going to shoot primer at an angle gets them in there I just don't want to shoot it and let it dry and then install it it'll take me like a month oh [Music] I finally got my SDS hammer drill broke off and chiseled off all this concrete so I can fit a full piece in here here's the problem because we have to start on that side for time's sake this would have been smarter to continue but I got to make sure my elevation of the footings is correct so that these puppies line up perfectly if I need to trim something I need to trim right now not later I don't know if this is going to line us up right now I think this is going to be overlapping it all right so we put our brains together here and I think we came up with that idea uh it's not a win-win situation but you have to kind of pick and choose where you want to have the imperfection…
