mas concrete work

What happens here

The initial phase of installing a concrete apron involves clearing the area of any debris, existing vegetation, or uneven terrain. This is followed by excavating the area to the required depth to accommodate the concrete slab and a compacted sub-base. In a professional setting, a skid steer is often used to efficiently move and level the soil, establishing the correct grade. This ensures proper drainage away from the building and adherence to the planned dimensions for the apron, sidewalk connection, and potential parking spots and dumpster pad. For DIY projects, this might involve more manual labor with shovels and rakes. The subgrade should be compacted thoroughly, ideally with a plate compactor, to provide a stable and unyielding foundation for the concrete slab, preventing future settling and cracking.

Goal: Prepare a stable, level sub-base with appropriate grading for the concrete apron.

Tools and materials

  • Compactor — Compacting the subgrade to create a dense and stable foundation for the concrete
  • Measuring Tape — Accurately measuring dimensions, depths, and slopes of the excavated area
  • Rakes — Spreading and leveling loose sub-base material and fine-tuning the grade
  • Shovels — Manual excavation, fine-tuning grading, and moving small amounts of earth
  • Skid Steer TL230 — Efficiently moving and leveling earth to establish correct grades for large areas
  • String Line and Stakes — Setting and checking elevation, as well as maintaining straight lines for grading
