What happens here

After the concrete has been poured and spread, the next critical step is screeding to achieve a flat and level surface. This involves using a long, straight edge, such as a dedicated concrete screed or a straight 2x4 lumber board, to cut off excess concrete and fill in any low spots. Workers drag the screed across the top of the forms in a sawing motion, moving forward to level the concrete to the desired elevation. Following screeding, bull floating is performed using a long-handled bull float. This tool is used to push down any large aggregates just below the surface, bring up cement paste (also known as 'fines'), and eliminate any minor surface irregularities or voids, preparing the concrete for subsequent finishing steps.

Goal: Create a flat, level concrete surface and prepare it for final finishing.

Tools and materials

  • Bull Float — Performing initial smoothing of the concrete surface, pushing down aggregates, and bringing up cement paste
  • Screed Board — Leveling the concrete surface by striking off excess material and filling low spots
