Lacquer or Paint for Cabinets? What is a BETTER finish?

What happens here

The video concludes by emphasizing the significant advantages of using lacquer over traditional latex paints for cabinet finishing. Lacquer is presented as being significantly 'more chemical resistant' and 'way more durable,' offering a 'far superior' finish with excellent quality and aesthetic depth. A major benefit for professionals is the 'faster turnaround time,' with lacquer drying within 15-20 minutes, allowing for multiple coats and a quicker project completion (e.g., a full kitchen in 2 days vs. double that with latex). The preferred application method discussed is the HVLP spray gun, specifically showcasing a Titan Magnum gun fitted with a 3M PPS system cup. This setup is highlighted for its efficiency, especially for smaller tasks, as the disposable liner system saves substantial cleanup time, allowing painters to switch products quickly.

Goal: Understand why lacquer is preferred over latex paint for cabinet finishing and the role of HVLP spray guns.

Tools and materials

  • 3M PPS System Cup 3M — Streamlining cleanup and product changes with the HVLP gun
  • HVLP Spray Gun — Applying lacquer for a smooth, even finish and fast turnaround
  • Titan Magnum HVLP Gun Titan Magnum — Specific model of HVLP gun for applying coatings

how we go about glazing doors. So, the products we've I think we've been using, how long we've been using the high build lacquers now? Maybe is it 3 years? Oh, it's it's been a little bit longer than that cuz we would use the clears on on like lacquer packages and things like that. So I want to say it's probably four or 5 years we've been using the high build clear and then probably the pigmented lacquers it's been about 3 years we've been working with them. So that's kind of what happens when you get old like time goes by a lot faster. You don't realize it together. It's just a big blur when you're over in your 50s. Um but uh I would say when it comes to rating the products we use them because we like them and I like the hydro uh lacquers a lot and um I think very highly of them. And when it comes to a star rating, I would probably give um these lacquers, one of the problems with is you can't get them now and you can't get them fast. So, you have to wait. So, I'd have to bump down the rating a little bit just cuz the accessessibility and um what what it causes the problems it causes with us. But, I think I'd give them probably, you know, um four stars. What would you rate them? Yeah, I definitely I'm probably four four and a half stars for something like this this Sherwood line. And it's the the high build line is just it's a high quality product. Uh some people ask us, they're like, "Well, why lacquer instead of paint?" And and lacquer, I mean, it's more chemical resistant. You've got a high faster turnaround time because it dries um within 15 20 minutes. You can recode it. And so in here, it's uh if this was a latex paint we were working with, we would have to spray it and then we would have to come back the next day in order to come through and glaze it and then put a clear coat over the top. With the lacquer, it's going to take me 20 minutes to spray everything. And while I'm cleaning that out, um it'll dry up. I'll go through, I'll do the glaze. That'll take me about 30 minutes to glaze everything, give or take. And then I'm going to be able to just put a clear coat right over the top of all of that. And and so I've taken something that is instead of a 12-hour job or or a a 16- hour job and we've compressed it down into three four hours, which is a good way to help kind of keep that turnaround up and make money for your business. And here comes a helicopter probably to arrest John. Um we'll let the helicopter fly by. Um now, what were you just…
