we're live here on YouTube we were just live on Instagram and I'm frantically trying to get YouTube set up so here we go it shows I'm live and we got Lisa cruising around here in the background we got John is going to be towed Lisa's going to be joining us here so being with us today you sound quiet I sound quiet I was just trying to get him out of our bathroom it's a very good day in Boise Idaho because a year ago they started my kitchen cabinets and I loved up and then they um did a stairs bathroom and I loved them but my bathroom hasn't been done but today was the day good things are worth waiting for so I'm so thankful that John is here and they're working on my cabinets and in a few minutes he's gonna come in so if you have any questions about cabinets today we're painting cabinets are gonna be or lacquering cabinets so we're gonna be talking about our process painting and lacquering cabinets so are you gonna we have some built in cabinets also are you going to use a different product on those um that's a good question I think we're gonna be doing all Locker but John and I have been discussing that whether we're gonna do paints and lacquers we kind of don't want to break out a whole bunch of different products at once but since we got the locker out we're gonna test out one of the doors that has paint on it and we're gonna see how the lack of reaction to the paint and go from there so yeah today's a great day to ask them questions because they're in the middle of projects yeah if you have any any questions any questions paint and lacquering cabinets all you got to do is just let us know so and so another thing is is you know we want to be part of this community and we rely on you guys when we need questions answered we put it out there for you guys and you asked you're gonna be stripping a door and so you put it out there for a few people but if anybody has any good products or any good suggestions on how to take care of an old historical dealer and get the best result of stripping you know hundreds of years of paint we want to hear from you yeah we're gonna be we're gonna be stripping a an old historical door we don't know whether it's got your latex paint oil-based paints it's got multiple layers of paints on it we're gonna be eventually staining it so it has to be staying grade when it's done so if you got any tips or tricks stripping right now and and John's the one that's spraying them right now so as soon as he gets those prime he's gonna be jumping in the air in a minute so we do got a bunch of people jumping on now of Chad right after the live show yes watch Star Wars so yeah we did yo we are gonna be talking about cabinet painting and sprain and cabinets with lacquers and stuff we are just live on Instagram and I just we were showing how we hang the cabinet doors on on Instagram with the cup hooks and a little bit about caulking um you can after this you can just pop over to Instagram and see us live in the bathroom okay I have new-generation painters as my wife's about to give birth whoa so we want to see a picture we want to hear the details and we pray that she's doing well and not a whole lot of pain and that the labor goes quickly but new generation painters we need to see and we need the details of boy girl named way yeah exciting like very exciting cool so um hey we got Ian from paint tech is hanging out he said my baby's leaving boohoo who's this baby Afton oh yeah I know that Star Wars because oh his is leaving to go ahead to Canada Canada Canada yeah yep we got Jacob white buffalo stay with a steady line pain ease and is hanging out here so cool so you know a little bit about cabinet painting I'll start it off John's right now I can hear the HVLP sprayer going right now but we can hear it I could smell it yeah we could already smell it they could smell it but it's a good smell because um you should turn the air off real quick oh I'm gonna go turn the air off because it's taking it off to the house it's circulating it for the house that's that's a um you know good point to bring up even when you're spraying you know interior or you're spraying lockers or anything like that one thing you want to do is we like the house to be extremely warm we want the temperatures ops and we'll crank up that the temperature but then once you start spraying you want we have forced air heating that's pretty common around so that the hairs being run through a furnace then it's coming through you know the floor vents and stuff and and you're just going to start circulating the smell or circulating dust if you don't turn off your furnace so so um we kind of just started because you were in their video I was trying to get you off Instagram and I was trying to get him off and he wasn't listening to me but um somebody said they want to represent your shirts and Virginia Beach Michael Michael Torres so how can they do that so guess what we do now we finally opened up John is the author of our new store he put together the store and we have our own store now when we're selling our paint life stuff we're selling our stickers or selling our hats paint life hats and shirts now so if you don't want to wait around to try to win one because we do give them away on Instagram and Facebook and and YouTube and stuff occasionally but if you want to buy them as soon as we open up the store we started selling a lot of them it's crazy thank you so much but we please be patient with us because we put the store out there but our order hasn't come in yet so you know once we get our order and we'll we'll try and get our orders right out but yeah some of those behind right now some of the sizes on the shirts on we got our hats are all in but some of the sizes on the shirts we're waiting on they are supposed to be in the middle of next week so people are placing orders and and how we're going to be shipping some of those sizes out next weeks so if you see me wearing a mask in a few minutes it's because of the fumes of you they want to know what is John's spray and it's a lacquer yeah so we'll talk about that when we paint cabinets we're using catalysed lockers and so we use when we're purchasing the lacquers that are hot it's the name of this a high build catalyzed lacquer so it's a lacquer that builds really thick and so it feels a little bit different than a lot of lacquers but it's a high build catalyze so they had a catalyst to it which basically gives it a pot life and so in about three months and you can't use it anymore but it does make it way harder and more resistant to all your household chemicals so we're using you know really high-end catalyzed lacquers yes and their strong smelling topics has ever hear of flash explosions from gas heaters and stoves that could definitely can happen so we do that's why we keep our we have our stuff ventilated so we're we're spraying right now we have a fan that blows out the door and it blows everything out out the door ventilating to you know not have that kind of situation but yeah when you're spraying lacquers they are flammable so you got to be careful with what you're doing but if you watch some of our videos on ventilating how we go about ventilating our spring booths and where we're spraying you'll get an idea how we ventilate so yeah so I'm paint tech Academy and you're saying how do we get them over here is it the shirts or is it the product that John's spraying so not too sure what you mean and then Chris Carmody said he's taking lunch he's in Vegas so we're glad to be with you hope you're having a healthy good lunch and tell me what is the temperature in Vegas because in Boise it's cold and gray no Sun cold and gray cold and gray it's called an inversion you know I know why you're smelling why you're snowing the lacquer in here right now because we're spraying them because we're we're spraying we've got a really really small area we usually will have a spray booth set up and then we'll have our area where we hang our doors we're happen to walk them outside the doors and we're coming back inside in our house and they're just hanging in our living room so they're drying so yeah we're not getting I mean you're getting some I turn the heater off so that was a good pro tip you know that when you're start spraying that stuff Eternity Britain um hi not just paint from Calgary somebody's look sounds like somebody's from Calgary kind of cool yes that is on our list to go to we have been so blessed lately to be able to so paint tech is that there arson they said this shirts so when you purchase our shirts from our store we ship anywhere in the world what happens is when you purchase the shirts it's gonna give you a shipping cost according to your location so you know obviously if you purchased this shirt from us you know and it's shipped here in the US it's only a couple dollars if you have it shipped into the UK the shipping is more because it just it has to fly over the ocean and then a big airplane I guess or on a boat so it cost a little bit more money so Erin today's color depression grade that's what we have but anne boleyn has 81 in sunny in Florida and sunny and 61 in Vegas yeah that sounds really nice yeah Oh Minnesota 21 and a little snow see I think a little snow would be better than just the gray because it's just thin version it's just not the greatest but it's it's fabulous in our house even though I'm getting fumes smell because I love when they complete project yeah so it's a good day for me it's Christmas yeah you gotta wait you gotta spray the other day if anybody hasn't seen the video or has any questions about it just posted a video a couple days ago got a bunch of yesterday three yesterday three great dose trainers sent to me so I got two more of the handhelds I really like the handheld sprayers and got them and then I got a great goal 595 that we're gonna be testing out so but when it comes to painting the cabinets you know some people we just had the questions what we use we use lacquers we use catalyzed lacquers so catalyzed is just it's adding you know another part into the lacquer that you know makes the lacquer dry Harbor and but then it's kind of like a two-part epoxy when you mix the catalyst you know with the epoxy you know Part A and Part B you mix them together stir them together they're gonna dry extremely hard they're gonna drive faster but they're only gonna last so long like an epoxy the epoxy we use it'll be dry in the pot within a day the the catalyzed adding the catalyst of the lacquer it has a pot life of about three months but versus the lacquers we used to use adding a catalyst to the lacquers it makes them dry a lot harder makes them more resistant to chemicals we do paint our cabinets now we use only HVLP sprayer so we use a tighten cap spray 115 when we're spraying our cabinets we used to in the past we used to paint them with just water-based paints and you know acrylic paints and higher-end acrylic paints but you know you from our experience and testing and the coatings and stuff the the lacquers are a lot more durable they're a lot more resistant to all household chemicals they're gonna be a lot more ascribable and then the finish just feeling the finish and HVLP sprayer spraying lacquers the finish feels just a lot better so somebody said do Phil Godfrey says do you ever use error assisted airless rigs it's definitely the way forward so I haven't used an air assistant airless I don't know if it's the way forward or not it's I mean Harris's said airless has been out for a while it's just another form of spraying that you know some people like them some people don't I've heard you know good things about them and while I was over with that paint tech Adam II in the UK there was a guy there that that uses them all the time and he absolutely loves that things are great you know I've heard other people that don't like them and think they're inconvenient but we're gonna be getting one from Greco I'm gonna be purchasing one here and we're gonna be testing out to see how it works but it's just I mean it's it's probably gonna from what I hear it gives you a better finish than an airless but you know I'm not sure I can't speak to it cuz I haven't used one yet but once again I hear you know people that like them and people that don't like them so so the product that you're using you got from a cabinet shop but it is do all manufacturers have those kind of product well not hard to I haven't tried to buy cabinet products from any other paint stores around here I know there's other paint sources that have Johan cabinet divisions and cabinet lacquers you know the paints are we buy from they specifically it's a it's a the cabinet division and we go in there and they sell just lacquers and high-end lacquers and they make glazes and all that kind of suffer for cabinets and stuff like that so just getting the locker mixed if we want a color it takes four days for them to get it done so it's not like your conventional paints or you can order a gallon of semi-gloss trim paint and and or cabinet pane you can get it mixed up and you can be painting that day yeah that the cabinet lacquers we use the dis high-end stuff every single gallon has to be custom matched and so it takes time it takes they want a lead time of four days so like today where we're spraying the cabinets if we run out we can you can't just go back there and say mix up a gallon of the same gallon because every gallon is custom matched out of a locker shop that's just the process how they go about doing it so it's really inconvenient but for what you get the type of product it's it's the very highest in you know cabinet lacquers that don't in by somebody asked who's the manufacturer they manufacture it's Sherwood and it's a sherwood product and it's made when we go to share williams and get it from Williams but it's sure its Sherwood is the product so Sherwood lacquers Sherwood high build catalyze lacquers the primer we always only paint our cameras we do two coats of primer first so we put a primer surfacer on and sometimes we'll use a catalyzed one sometimes we we won't but we'll put the primer surfacer on two coats and we put two coats of topcoat of our catalyzed lacquer over the top of that so so I'm wrong said how do you prep the cabin doors prior to painting Sam I'm not too good questions go see if you can see if John's ready to come in here and I'll talk about that real fast and I'm just to see what John's doing so how we prep them the you know the the easy method how we typically do it is in a lot of it depends on the age of the cabinet's but we start off using Dawn dish soap and we've used a lot of different chemicals and stuff to clean our cabinets and get them ready to paint because one of the things you're gonna run into one of the absolute nightmares is fisheye and that's contaminants being on your your cabinet so when you spray it with a lacquer it it beads away and little round circles and we call them fish eyes and what that is is it's a difference in surface tension between your your locker and the chemical contaminant that's on your surface and because there's a difference in surface tension the one chemical like your lacquer is gonna want to flow away from the the contamination that usually flows away and little circles what we call fish eyes and so you have to get all the contaminant off how do you know because your majority the time you know it's just clear it's gonna be some type of maybe silicone or some type of cleaner or some type of food oil or a lot of type people try to clean their cabinets with lemon oils and stuff like that so there's a lot of different contaminants that can be on your cabinet but well typically we use Dawn dish soap because it doesn't leave any residue behind and we'll scrub them with Dawn dish soap now depending on the cabinets in some of the situations will use denatured alcohol denatured alcohol works really really good as a cleaner it's spraying you so spraying all right so you still spraying you'll be it in just a little bit so the two things we use once again is is Dawn dish soap that the age of the cabinet's the ones we have you know we're working on right now they're the only like five years old six years old they're they're pretty clean but they are in a bathroom there's a lot of weird things hair gels hair sprays stuff like that that can contaminate the cabinet but we cleaned them with Dawn dish soap you scrub them really good and we just use like a brillo there the sponge with the green brillo a little pat on the back and we'll scrub them with that and just feel them down make sure there's nothing on them you know if they're kitchen like food particles and stuff like that and then just check them really good and then we you know we the floating panels and we them with bolt caulking and we just shot a video doing that so I'm gonna be posting that video on YouTube how we actually caulk my method I use a method of caulking with a sponge and John uses a method of caulking with a rag and we showed both of those methods on the video I'll be posting that pretty soon so on sometimes I do use a catalyzed primer we do sometimes use a catalyzed primer so y'all you always got to make sure you know on the products you're using or compatible with each other so the the primers the cert primer surfacer we're using with the catalyzed lockers sometimes we use a catalyzed one sometimes we don't and today today we're using a it's not a catalyzed primer surfacer it's a Sherwood high build primer surfacer and it's a if you're painting cabinets oak cabinets that are very grainy it does a pretty decent job it doesn't fill all the grain in but it does a pretty decent job filling the grain just by spraying if you want all the grain to go away we use a product called aqua Co and we'd smear the aqua coat all over it with I usually use like a credit card or something and that is what you'd use to completely get rid of the grain but that primer surfacer the high-build primer surfacer does do a fairly decent job so he said is Dione says as a surface of self-loving leveling sort um it is self leveling but it like lacquers I'm the cabinet's we're painting today typically most of the cabinet's we're painting are lacquer and so what we're spraying them we're topping them over with another lacquer and the O the lacquer just melts into the previous coat of lacquer kind of melts in and just self levels and the the primer surfacer that we use whether that we use the catalyzed one and not catalyzed one we in between coats we never have to say on I mean in between the coats when we're done I mean if we had to sand we would but they always come out absolutely smooth so under um one more question they have another one…
