What happens here

This DIY project details the process of refinishing existing kitchen cabinets to achieve a refreshed, modern look without the cost of full replacement. The project involves disassembling cabinet doors and drawers, thoroughly cleaning and sanding all wood surfaces, applying a new dark stain to the cabinet frames, and clear coating the doors and drawers for a two-tone effect. Emphasis is placed on proper preparation, dust control, and achieving consistent finishes.

all right Frankie where are we doing today oh we're gonna take off all the cabinets doors the drawers and refinish them easy enough yeah so not everybody can afford to install new cabinets in their house so today we're going to take use what we have and it's that's been in what 7,500 to $9,000 we're gonna try to refinish these cabinets and give them a brand new look for under 100 bucks in materials not labor and take you through step by step the entire process I think we caught we I think we spent 90 bucks and we splurged a little bit cuz we did stick new poles on it but we're gonna show you everything that we do mmm it's not gonna go right we're gonna screw a few things up today why because we're dirt workers that's why but we still have enough common sense to know how to refinish cabinets plain and simple and if you got a problem with that but what somebody else's video where they do everything perfect [Music] [Applause] so we're gonna do something a little bit different Frankie's currently working out of town and I'm gonna try to call him and see if I can get him on the phone and ask him to walk us through the steps that he did on this project step-by-step so we can better understand how to do it so let's try that right now so you sanded I see you sanded the cabinet's down so then you under you actually hadn't removed the old poly because the new stain that we were putting on wouldn't adhere with the old poly over the framework right okay so what what grit sandpaper did you use I mean how did you did you start with the coarser gritty wait up I'm sorry what was that Frankie 120 and 220 you didn't go to 400 grit okay so then and I seen you attached vacuums to each one of the Sanders that was just to keep the dust down right yep why did you put the plastic underneath the the upper countertop our upper cabinets was that just to protect the counters okay perfect okay okay all right thanks Frankie I'll call you later if I need anything else okay [Music] pretty good how long does this for six hours before we can put like two polygons yeah yeah but 50 anywhere you can put another coat on now if you wanted to see if we darken up you know okay I don't think you know I don't know if they'll type it up much more I don't yeah I don't know you know a guy could try let's not go to the absorb I'm gonna try that one drawer piece oh yeah you know yeah I'll put that I'll do a second court on a cat that won't matter so we're gonna do something completely different than what you've probably seen before because why not why not I just like trying new things sometimes they're home runs and sometimes they flop and one way or not I really don't care if you like it or you don't like it the goal of this video is to give you guys ideas of things that you can do on your own now for you guys to follow blindly along and do everything I do now if you don't like it don't worry about it let me know in the comments down below and next time I have Christmas I'll just make sure that I don't invite you over all right so next step we're doing the drawers so we're sanding the faces getting them all cleaned up and then what Pauline them yeah hey Frankie can you hear me okay okay hey quick question for you when you were doing the door faces and the drawers can you kind of walk me through step by step what you guys did to get those prepped and ready to refinish them what did you use for soap when you wash them because some soaps leave residue Murphy's Oil Soap yep okay so you wash them with that then you sanded the faces yeah what grit sandpaper did you use when you were sanding on 220 the same as the framework yeah okay and then the poly that you put on what what poly did you use like satin eggshell what did you use okay so on the framework of the frames of the cabinet's you use satin but on the doors themselves you only clear-coated it nothing else yeah because gloss satin clear and then and then a Mac that's it hard drink you know the poly yeah clear on the doors is there anything else we need to know about what you did to the doors how many how many coats are clear did you put on them okay okay and you used rags or brushes when you were putting it on brushes with the poly for the drawers faces and rags on the same phrases why did you use rags on the stain so why did you brush the faces yeah instead of ragging it okay that's all I want Frankie thank you okay all right so after we've been putting the stain on we've been having to go through and wipe it down cuz the wood is only going to absorb so much stain and if you don't do that you're gonna inconsistencies in the color now right Frankie yep all right while Frankie is down working on the drawers I'm gonna work on we're going to put a second coat on these cabinets as if you see down on these lower ones they look dark they're looking darker just because they're underneath the countertop which is pretty dark and further away from the light also these ones down here they have a better they all seem to have a better grain than these ones up here so we're gonna try and darken these top ones up a little bit but not too sure how much more stain it's gonna take so after the second coat was on the cabinets we found out that it just wasn't doing it it wasn't achieving the look we wanted so even though we were putting two coats on and hoping of darkening it up we were gonna actually end up going backwards you're gonna find out that all right so we have a little bit of change plans today the first stain we put on did not get dark enough so we got everything re sanded and this is kind of more the look that we're going for so we're gonna re stain everything yep so to get the new color to take that we had to start back all over again with the framework so everything had to go back down to bare wood so we could then try out the second color stain [Music] all right so all of the Pali we put on the doors yesterday as dry clothes are all good to go next step is I got to sand the excess Pali that dripped down the sides you can kind of see some right along here I got sand all of that down just let the doors will close all the way when we put them back on the cabin [Music] so if you're wondering we're staining the framework at different colors in the cabinet's on purpose because we just want to see how it turns out I don't know if it's gonna turn out or not but we're gonna give it a shot and see how it looks and you guys are gonna see it in the fall three minutes yourself hey Frankie I got one last question for you when you are applying the stain to the upper and lower cabinets did you do one coat or two coats so you you use the sec so in the second time around you picked up a different stain color a darker stain and went one coat with it so you wiped use the rag put it on and then you wiped it off right and then you sealed that with what was it satin or something the framework satin perfect okay so that's all I got for you thanks Frankie all right all right you guys well we're not quite done with this job yet I want you to look at something here in an upcoming video we're gonna be showing you how we did this full paint finish using some spare paint that I found sitting underneath my basement steps all right this is where I keep all my extra old paint right there's one bonus and one else to be yeah ceiling paint a stick that I pulled from outside and a paper bag and that's how I did this kind of paint technique down here I'm gonna teach you guys how to do it I call it my ghetto paint technique anyway long story behind it and we're also going to do some under cabinet lighting put some drawer pulls on and then in the next video we'll show you the entire finished thing and that's it we will see you guys on the next video god bless go get em you guys I'm gonna pop up a video here I'm gonna pop one up here and please hit that subscribe button we'll see you next time [Music]
