What happens here
Spread a layer of paver sand or concrete sand over the compacted gravel base. Lay down screed rails (metal pipes are commonly used) at the desired depth for the sand bed. Use a long, straight edge (like a wooden 2x4) to drag across the screed rails, effectively leveling the sand to a uniform thickness. Carefully remove the screed rails and fill in the small trenches they leave behind, smoothing the area by hand.
Goal: Create a perfectly level and consistent sand bed for brick placement
Tools and materials
- Paver Sand / Concrete Sand — Creating the bedding layer for the bricks
- Rake — Spreading the sand
- Screed Rails — Guiding the straight edge to create a uniform sand depth
- Straight Edge — Leveling the sand bed by dragging across the screed rails
