Set Screed Rails and Distribute Sand

Installing Brick pavers -start to finish day2
What happens here
Use a measuring tape and a large speed square to establish perfectly square reference lines for the paver installation. Since existing structures like sidewalks or house foundations might not be perfectly square, create your own baseline. For this project, a new line is snapped 8 inches from the crooked existing sidewalk edge. Once the baseline is established, lay down two galvanized steel plumbing pipes (1-inch diameter) parallel to each other. These pipes will act as screed rails, defining the exact height and slope for the sand setting bed. Ensure these pipes are perfectly level using a level and make any fine adjustments to the Class 5 base underneath by adding or removing material and re-compacting any disturbed areas with a hand tamper. Once the pipes are perfectly set, a bulk bag of sand is brought in by the skid-steer loader and emptied onto the prepared area.
Goal: Create a perfectly level sand setting bed for the pavers.
Tools and materials
- Galvanized Steel Plumbing Pipe — Serving as screed rails to guide the leveling of the sand bed
- Hand Tamper — Re-compacting any disturbed Class 5 aggregate
- Large Speed Square — Establishing 90-degree angles and square lines
- Level — Ensuring the screed rails are perfectly level
- Measuring Tape — Measuring distances and establishing reference points
- Shovel — Distributing sand from the bulk bag and making small adjustments
- Skid-Steer Loader Caterpillar — Transporting and distributing the bulk sand bag
- String Line — Marking straight lines across the base
- Sand — Creating the setting bed for the pavers
