HowTo Measure Treads 1080p

Hi everyone, it's Amy from Oak Valley Designs. I'm going to talk to you about measuring your stairs so that you can order the perfect size for your carpet stair tread. Okay, you need two measurements. You need a width and you need a depth. Let's start with a width. You're going to take a measurement from the spindle to the wall. It could be wall to wall, whatever your staircase looks like. and that is 43 in. Next, you're going to want to decide how much wood to see on either side of the carpet stair tread. So, we recommend 2 to 4 in of wood on either side. Let's go with 4 in for this order. And let's say 4 in + 4 in is 8. 43 - 8 is 35. So, a 35 wide stair tread is perfect for this step. Let's go to measurement number two. That's going to be your depth. Your depth is going to be all right. This measures 11 and 1/4. Okay, we're not going to order 11 and 1/4. We're going to subtract a/4 in and we're going to order an 11. So that'll give us a little space in the back, which is perfect. And what you want so that the carpet stair tread is really tight on this front bullnness. You do not want that to hang over. And that's really important. You could also say, well, I can either subtract a/4 in or a/ in would also be fine. It doesn't have to be an absolute perfect science. You just want a little space in the back. So, anywhere from a/4 in to a/ inch is perfect. And that's it. So, I would do a 35 by 11 and that would be great. I want to share with you just a little helpful tip to make sure that you're happy with the size tread that you're ordering and that it works great on your staircase. You can take in account for your corner post, your spindles, your walls, and make sure it's exactly what you want. Just grab some painters tape from the store and place it down in the same size that you would like to order your carpet stair treads. Line them up and this way you can adjust. If you say, "Oh, well, I would like to see more carpet." Then you can move your painters tape out and add a couple inches to your order or you know what? I'd like to see more wood and you can make your tread smaller. But painters tape is a really great way to ensure that you're happy with your carpet stair tread order.
