What happens here

This project demonstrates an enhanced method for installing Palram EZ Glaze Polycarbonate Panels on a pergola roof, focusing on creating a walkable and more structurally sound surface. Unlike direct installation to rafters, this method involves notching the rafters to accommodate purlins, providing intermediate support for the panels and allowing for safe maintenance access. The creator emphasizes the importance of upsizing rafters when using this notching technique.

You've seen us use this product on a lot of our projects. It's the Power Rafter Easy Glaze system. There's a couple different ways to install it and we've gotten this question a lot. First, I'm going to show you how you can install it with just regular rafters, 2-ft on center. It's designed to just go like this. Screw it right in there, but you have no support in the middle, so you're not going to be able to walk on it. I'm going to show you how we like to install it with purlins. So, I've just notched this out 2 and 1/4 in because we're going to use 2x. I just ripped this down to 2 and 1/2 in. So, we've notched this out 2 and 1/4, so we've got 1 and 1/2 of material and then it's still sticking up 3/4 of an inch. That way, you can go over top. We can fasten it here. This part is going to overlap our next panel. And by building it like that, makes your whole structure more solid and we can walk over it. So, if you need to get up there to clean it or anything like that, super easy. Only thing to keep in mind, you're going to be cutting into your rafters 2 and 1/4 in, so make sure that you size up your rafters. If your span is rated for a 2x10, go up to a 2x12 because you'll be notching it. But, that's how we like to do it. Works great and looks great with the Power Rafter Easy Glaze.
