How to run a Payloader. Cab controls & basics for the noob pt 3

What happens here

The instructor's wife asks about a 'delayed engine shutdown' feature. The Volvo representative explains that most modern diesel engines, especially in heavy equipment and even some pickup trucks, are equipped with turbochargers that spin at very high RPMs (e.g., 10,000-12,000 RPM) and generate immense heat. He emphasizes that turbochargers are expensive components. The delayed engine shutdown feature allows the engine to continue running for a short period after the key is turned off, providing time for the turbocharger to cool down safely with circulating oil or air. This prevents the turbocharger from 'cooking' in its own residual heat, significantly prolonging its lifespan and protecting a major investment.

Goal: Understand the purpose and benefits of delayed engine shutdown in heavy equipment.

Tools and materials

  • Safety Vest — Ensuring visibility for the Volvo representative
  • Smartphone with remote control — Used by the instructor to control video recording
  • Volvo L120H Wheel Loader Volvo — Context for discussion about engine features
  • Water Bottle — Prop held by the instructor

though. Oh, my wife just had a really good question. You were asking about the delayed engine shutdown. Now, a lot of payloaders have it. Not all equipment has it though. Skid loaders don't have it. So, basically what we're talking about is, you know, with a diesel engine, most diesel engines have a turbocharger. Um, and the turbocharger spins at like 10 to 12,000 RPM. So, it gets really really hot. Um, and it's it's not a cheap component on the engine. So if we continuously shut the engine down without allowing that time to cool um the turbocharger just sits there and cooks and cooks and cooks um because it doesn't have any kind of air movement or oil movement some of them are oil cooled um to cool it down. So these machines now a lot of manufacturers are coming out with and I know even even uh truck manufacturers like Dodge and you know Ford whatever pickups have it as well um that you can that turn the key off and the machine will continue to run until the temperature is adequately low enough to to shut the machine down. Hopefully
