It is critical to use a pool paint that is compatible with any existing paint on the pool surface. For pools previously painted with chlorinated rubber paint, use another chlorinated rubber paint. This type of paint is solvent-based and 'melts' into the previous coating, ensuring excellent adhesion without the need for extensive sanding. If your pool was previously painted with an epoxy-based or water-based paint, you would need to use a compatible paint or remove the old paint entirely (e.g., by sandblasting or walnut blasting) if switching types, as incompatible paints can lead to adhesion issues.
