How to paint a door while not taking it down. Painting A Door.

What happens here

The first practical masking step involves opening the door and applying 1.5-inch masking tape around the entire inside perimeter of the door frame (jamb). This ensures that no paint overspray goes onto the interior trim or into the house when the exterior is sprayed. The tape is applied to the back side of the door as well to fully protect the interior.

Goal: Prevent overspray from reaching the interior of the house.

Tools and materials

  • 3M Hand Masker 3M — Dispensing masking tape and paper efficiently
  • Exterior Door — The surface to be painted
  • Masking Tape — Protecting the interior door frame from overspray

We use a 3M hand masker. We're going to mask the footings off. We're going to mask the two door knobs off. And we're going to mask the inside of the door. Here we've actually masked the inside to make sure no overspray goes through. We just use inch and a half tape all around the inside of the door so overspray won't go on the inside of the trim. We put it all the way around the door. We actually put it on the back side. This side of the door too. And then we put it on this side also. And then the handles.
