How to fix a bare spot in your yard
What happens here
For bare spots with hard-packed clay soil, simply adding seed and straw won't be enough for long-term success. You need to introduce organic matter to improve the soil structure. The presenter demonstrates using composted horse manure, which is rich in biological material and acts as a fertilizer. You can collect composted manure from local sources, agricultural centers, or municipal compost facilities. Five to ten bags of composted manure (or good garden soil as an alternative) would be sufficient for an area of about 40 square feet.
Goal: Improve the soil quality of hard clay bare spots before seeding.
Tools and materials
- 5-Gallon Bucket Kikkoman Soy Sauce — Transporting composted manure
- ATV with Front Loader Wild Hare — Moving larger quantities of composted manure (shown in video for larger loads)
- Garden Rake — Spreading composted manure evenly
- Composted Horse Manure — Amending hard-packed clay soil to add organic matter and nutrients
