How to build a retaining wall. #hardscape #retainingwall

What happens here

After the first course of blocks is laid, a perforated drain pipe is installed directly behind it. This pipe, often referred to as "agricultural pipe" or "socked drain pipe" (equipped with a fabric sleeve to prevent clogging), is designed to collect any moisture that seeps into the backfill area. Installing this drain pipe prevents hydrostatic pressure from building up behind the wall, which could lead to bulging, cracking, or catastrophic failure. Once the drain pipe is correctly positioned, it is surrounded and completely covered with clean, angular drainage stone. The geotextile fabric (from Step 4) should then be pulled up and over this stone layer to fully encapsulate it, ensuring total separation from the native soil.

Goal: Provide an exit point for moisture accumulating behind the wall
