What happens here

Beyond the proper filling of paver joints with polymeric sand, a fundamental and equally important factor in preventing weeds is thorough soil compaction. During the initial stages of patio installation, specifically after excavating and before laying any base materials or pavers, the subsoil must be compacted to a dense, 'rock solid' state. A highly compacted subsoil significantly reduces the possibility of weed growth by not providing the loose, fertile habitat that vegetation needs to thrive from underneath the paver system.

Goal: Recognize soil compaction as a primary, foundational method for preventing weeds.
