What happens here

This video captures a discussion about the performance, maintenance issues, and cost-effectiveness of gas versus diesel trucks for business use, particularly for landscaping and property maintenance. It highlights the challenges faced with modern diesel trucks, such as DEF issues and complex emission systems, and compares them to gas trucks in terms of longevity and repair costs. The conversation features a Hennessey Mammoth 900 TRX owner, a diesel truck mechanic/customer, and the video creator, Stanley, from Dirt Monkey. It also showcases specific examples of repairs on a Ford F-250 gas truck.

good morning you guys got a brand new day brand new video coming your way we're at top-notch equipment and there's something i've never seen before and these guys are looking at you guys remember harry right hey how are you doing stan good dusty how you doing good good good hey jason nice to meet you nice to meet you you got a 900 horsepower truck uh it's a 2021 uh dodge ram uh trx okay and stock with the uh the hellcat engine horsepower 702 okay um the dealership sent this down to hennessey racing okay and they added a bigger blower and and uh upped the the airflow and all that to make 912 horsepower 912 you said that without stunning 912 horsepower it's 760 to the wheels and it's uh 860 foot pounds of torque they call it the mammoth 900 yep and then hennessy also has a mammoth 1000 but it's more of it's more temperamental so this is number 54. sorry it's dirty i didn't expect to be on camera but this is number 54. hennessey's going to do 200 of them of the 900s this is one of 60 to 63. i don't remember they don't didn't tell me but of 2021s there's the t-rex eating the raptor it's like a little nod to ford there oh i love it did you have any electrical problems with that whatsoever mine is always have an electrical problem no no i've had diesels and i've had very good luck with those and like i said i don't i always no i was gonna buy a diesel truck and three people have talked me out of it dusty was one talked me out of it a mechanic that i didn't know from adam that worked on diesel trucks talked me out of it and the dealer talked me out of it it depends on what you're doing with the truck and how many miles you're gonna put on it if you're gonna drive like with my business when i got it it had diesels but since i drove so little miles 15 000 miles a year yeah i would not buy diesels again for my business but if you're gonna put a lot of miles on it i would buy diesel because you get three hundred thousand when i was doing estimating all that i'm putting 25 30 000 a year now they're worried about death shortages and if you live above a certain latitude i wouldn't get one either because your death is freezing up i was told i was told by the dealer he sat next to me and said hey you know you know how you get around the problem with the death and i'm like i didn't know there was a problem with death okay how do you get around it he says well you know it's freezing up on guys and i said i didn't know that either but how do you get around that he's like oh just about 30 minutes before you're going to drive it go out and start it up so it can thaw the the death out i'm like how's that work when i got to go plow and i'm like hey can you get here like 10 minutes ago well yeah just give me 30 minutes for my truck to get ready to go to work i know that's yeah and then i i would say if that's the issue then absolutely but i i never had issues and for my business i wouldn't buy diesel yeah yeah no gas because i you buy these salt for the mileage is what i would do yep there's no uh and the equipment's getting lighter and we're using less bobcats for what we did you know and stuff like that so that the gas engines can pull it fine yeah you know that's what i'm finding too it it was you know back in the day when they made a really good decent decision now the company's a great deal don't get me wrong but when 2012 happened and the government got involved yeah they messed it up imagine that right shocker there shocker there they don't make anything better they may get worse so like on on my truck would i find i buy i went with all gassers myself and what i found is that um the bodies and all the components besides the engines will wear out like i've got a ford a 2015 ford right now we've put it 12 grand into everything but you know the engine well we did put new heads on the engine and a few other things but the rest of the money has been in the rest of the truck and it gets to a certain stage where about a hundred to 150 000 miles it's i call it the nickel and dime factor on a work truck everything falls apart their work trucks are thrown away just buy it and figure you got 150 000 miles and you better toss that son of a duck and get a brand new one or you're going to be spending more money than it's worth at that point and you pay an extra 10 grand for that diesel engine and that engine is going to be absolutely fine and you're not worried about that engine is it 150 000 on a gas or not a problem and 150 000 on a diesel is definitely not a problem it's everything else that's the problem leading up to the engine so if you're not getting the benefit of that long life out of the diesel then why spend the money on well i agree with that especially since the death systems suck yeah you know that's an additional feat you gotta pay additional you know every three times you fill up the tank you gotta fill you know forty dollars worth of death so yeah i agree i agree it's just you know every business is different well thanks for showing me your 900 horsepower and yeah well i'll let you i'll start it up for you you got to get back here and listen oh yeah okay okay have any of you guys switched from gas to diesel or from diesel to gas and what's been your experience so i want to share with you an experiment that we tried inside of our company in 2014 around 2015 we switched everything over from diesel to gas and just wanted to see how it affected the performance and what the crews were noticing and long-term results now we've had the same gas trucks since 2015 running we bought two ford gassers and we also then upgraded and i wouldn't really call it an upgrade but as time went on we added into the fleet when we needed extra trucks we switched over to the ram trucks as well and the problems that we're having with the ford trucks and the problems that we're having with the ram trucks are consistent across the board so it's not a ford versus ram versus a chevy versus an anything thing what we are noticing is that all of our trucks whether they're ford or ram have all sorts of mechanical problems outside of the engine so alex can you walk us through the repairs that we've been doing with your truck and because it started the first one was the first day it snowed last year actually we blew the transfer case first had to replace the rear drive shaft the front drive shaft both u-joints the rear seal on the transfer case itself then we blew both axle joints then wait a minute that wasn't at the same time no this is like maybe two months after two months after how much would that first bill cost oh i think that was about seven or eight grand something something like that yep okay and then what happened then we blew this side axle joint and uh ripped apart the ball joints in the hub at the same time when it snapped then we blew that axle joint over there ripped apart the hub and the ball joint again how far how far apart where did that happen oh maybe uh two months or so i'd say okay so not all at the same time not all at the same time nope and then we replaced just recently but this has been a problem since the cat got cut off i mean it was a growing problem but it just got really bad after the cat got cut off but both manifolds got replaced both sides and uh we so the manifolds could be part of the problem with the cat maybe you think or any of this because obviously the front fallen part has nothing to do with the catalytic converter falling off is just possibly if he was torquing on that cat over on that side it could have sped up the process of that of the manifold actually cracking okay i think it was totally unrelated i mean they were so rusty and and i mean you got to get in there and spray it with water for the salt so it's kind of like getting that hot and cold and hot and cold you know yeah there's no way around spraying it i want to get the salt off of there if ford made a better design and had this come all the way down i mean you can see the manifold right there so salt is just getting sprayed in there i mean your wheels are turned you got your wheel turned like this it's just going right into there you know so you got to clean that off spray it off okay okay so i think just a combination of water and the heat and uh rusting over time okay but then what happened because now we're still not done with all the issues we've been having right no since we decided to hold off on the manifolds and kind of limp them along because that was an expensive fix it actually all the moisture came from the manifold and got on all got corroded all of our plugs all of our coils we had to replace all the coils all the plugs and a coil pack was 140 a piece okay and what did that what did that one cost us total for parts twelve hundred bucks okay and then i did it myself you did it on the weekend with timmy i think yeah tim came there i crashed so he had to come help me finish it up two bolts snapped off from the rust all that moisture from the manifolds going up there was that the last repair the manifolds were the last repair you didn't have one this morning because they came and took my uh tail lights just went out too so burned up a wire in the taillights so they got that rewired up and what do you think we've spent in the last since since the first you know though in the last six months eight months whatever since the first time we pull out or whatever it was you know when we had the first major probably 16 grand 16 grand and it still needs the front tie rod bar which is another thousand bucks so that's what i'm talking about with like i i was telling these guys these trucks start to nickel and dime us together so this how many miles does this truck have on it 85 000 geez i thought we had 125 000 now on my truck i don't have cruise control anymore i got it oh this truck is starting to fall apart on me right now i think i even got the keys here let's show you what all is going on with this thing so this truck with let's just like see we got 32 000 what do we got thirty two thousand one hundred and sixty miles and well besides the oil change service tire for besides that my automatic my braking system service anti-lock brake system uh we've got lights going on i've got no uh cruise control nothing like that as she's just probably a wheel speed sensor for the cruise control and that's probably why it's throwing the abs light too but she's just continually starting at 32 000 miles starting to give us problems yeah so and as far as like dry paint train goes for like drive shafts and axles i think diesel to gas i'm pretty sure they're the same you know maybe the diesel one will have a little bit beefed up uh drive shaft because they're i mean they're getting almost twice as much torque and horsepower out of them so i can imagine them being beefed up a little bit but for like as like front end suspension like those i'm pretty sure those uh front axle joints are the same on the diesels to the gassers so i mean but the thing is is this truck is going from like you want to accelerate and you're going up a hill you're it's jumping to like 5000 rpms if you got a skid on the back you know so like you're kind of got to get on it and then you just you feel it and then it's just riding the rpm so you can get up to speed you know so you're so you're noticing that lack of power oh 100 yeah okay any gas engine i mean the diesel's the turbo is going to spool up 1800 2000 rpms and you're going to be just smooth sailing what about this truck have you ever towed with this one yeah the same thing same thing isn't it it doesn't matter if it's ram or ford it's it's just kind of uh i don't want to say they're gutless but with 10 000 pounds behind them they're gutless you know yeah so no i don't agree with that i mean i think i i've had gutless trucks i've had gutless diesels where you're praying that you just get up that hill at 40 miles per hour yeah you know and i've had gassers which just walk right around them nowadays all those diesel trucks are okay so last question fuel economy in a diesel and the price versus the gasser so what are you what you've got all your buddies run dirt uh ex landscaping companies everything alex doesn't know anybody that doesn't um and they all run diesels right how is their fuel economy what are they saying my buddy p his truck has a tuner and an exhaust on and he's probably getting 16 to 17 miles that 200 cheats though yeah because that's gonna give you better yeah it is but on a average gas truck or on a diesel truck you're probably getting 13 12 to 13 miles to the pulling average pulling pulling yeah pulling yep and i'm getting 10.9 to 12. yeah and i'm getting eight are you getting eight yeah i'm getting 10 without pulling anything you're getting 10 without pulling maybe 11. yeah what engine is this one the 6.2 okay so let's all right and you wanted these all right i do yeah even with all the problems diesel trucks have yeah what did the diesel mechanic tell tim why not to buy a diesel truck because he sat down with tim and tim was like crap because uh i went to uh mike with fury motors and mike i was doing a ride-along and a new diesel truck i didn't care i was ready to buy something right and he's and he's we pull in and he's like hey do you want to know the problem with the diesel trucks and i'm like well i didn't know there was one but what is it there for the death is freezing up on them and you got to start them 30 minutes before you actually want to run them to do that then the diesel mechanic was told us not to buy one and then dustin from uh top-notch equipment who has multiple crews out there bought a diesel a ram diesel truck and he was like i would never buy another one it was the biggest nightmare i ever had nothing but issue after issue after issue what's your two cents on that you know there's lemons out there you possibly could get a lemon and you know everyone's some people get a vehicle and if it's a lemon they get a bad opinion on it and they're like i eat diesel because of it you know yeah and it just kind of gives them a sour taste in their mouth and that's their opinion you know i know a lot of friends and a lot of people that run companies that run diesels that don't have half as many problems as other people talk about you know do they like the ford or the ram the ford for sure but for cost that ford is like 10 grand more so i would go with the dodge you know they both make a pretty bulletproof truck you're gonna go through your front end and a dodge like no other you know and the body and the body but for like maintenance wise you're gonna blow through the front end you're gonna that's that's a common dodge issue with the fords i mean you're gonna get a nice solid truck but the ford front ends are you know after 25 30 000 miles they tend to get loose you know like a little sloppy in them especially pulling around plowing you're driving around with the plow all winter that's really beating up the front end on them too all right well do you guys think i should buy alex a diesel or a gas vote vote down below that's what it's based on we'll find out vote down below do i buy alex diesel or gas and is it ford or a ram yeah i hope they vote ford i understand the price point of it you know would you have anything against the godzilla engine though for working besides the fact that it's a fuel pig just it's new you know they're going to be working out kinks and and they're going to be correct and stuff and there's going to be recalls on it and they're going to be finding new problems with them every day so it's just it's still too new i hear it's a great motor but there hasn't been a lot of people putting too many miles on them yet right so we'll see how that goes when people are driving them more all right that's all we got for you in this one god bless go get em
