What happens here

This video provides a detailed teardown of an old, leaking InSinkErator Badger 1 garbage disposal. The goal is to investigate its internal components, understand its construction, and identify the cause of the failure, which is ultimately found to be a rusted-through hole in the housing.

there we go hey folks today i want to take a look inside of a garbage disposal i've got an old badger one here that just pulled out of my neighbor's house and i've never taken a guard disposal apart i'd like to do it i'd like to show you guys so come along let's get to fixing [Music] [Applause] okay so this is what we're looking at this is incincurator badger one okay it's a third horsepower and it comes with a one year in-home warranty personally i don't recommend anything less than a badge or five right it's just me it's preference um i actually really like three quarter horsepower disposals they tend to last longer you can get them with stainless steel insides and that's what we put in theirs right they ask for a recommendation it's what i gave them this is pretty much contractor grade you get a new home you're gonna buy the cheapest model they can and slap it in here's what we're looking at so far what i see is four screws the screw heads right here they look like they're like a reverse torx but what i did was i went to my mechanics tool set i grabbed a 3 16 socket for this screwdriver set up here and it actually works really well there's so long it was actually that's the whole way down to the bottom all right just get all these popped out yeah that one definitely had some leakage a little bit of rust on her i don't know how long it had been leaking i just know that it was leaking now i guess a screwdriver try to pry that apart i probably could try to grab a painter's tool or something but you know what screwdrivers work pretty good and as screwdrivers go you can tell i use that for prying right because that is wonkied up oh yeah very gently just uh okay so i think we're gonna go on the side at this point that top just pops out oh we got a little treasure so look at that kind of wild it smells like garlic there definitely looks like that's what that was little cloves of garlic but that is what we're looking at oh hold on let's talk to mabel i know these cutter heads are actually still in really good shape a lot of times when you change out at an old disposal you're gonna see that these right here are actually rusted off and break off and you know people pull these out once in a while it's kind of crazy but everything looks i don't know for the most part still in tact here and i guess where it could have been leaking is there's an o-ring right down here right let's grab our screwdriver again and we'll pop that out and i'll show you and it looks i don't know i look like it was in pretty decent shape oh there's definitely some moisture on top of that still yeah so this o-ring right here actually seals this top piece on with this other kind of i don't know if that's silicone or some kind of an adhesive and that helps that stay in place yeah that's totally i don't know what kind of adhesive that is but this black stuff is totally something that just sits there and allows those together go together i mean look at that it's pretty sticky it's oh yeah stretchy it's gonna allow for a good watertight seal so it's nice to know i mean this is just a foreign body with a another piece of metal on the inside right here that kind of helps i think catch food and grind i think between this and this plate right here you know it just kind of helps catch stuff grind it up and then send her on through so i'm assuming that something down inside here and down in here had to have been leaking there has to be a hole or something there because everything around here looks like it's good and it looks like it was pretty sealed up i mean maybe i'm wrong but it all looks pretty good we're actually going to try to pop this off right here we will see if we can get the uh vise over here to hold this in place we'll try to pop this top nut off and just tear this down a little bit more alright so we got this bad boy hooked up right there let's just try to clean around this bolts a little bit all right so just hit that up with a little heating blaster so this knot is 9 16. we're going to see what we can do here we let that soak in for a little while man my uh my vice won't hold this thing tight enough okay so here's what we got rolling i had to downsize my ratchet to this one all right because a cheater bar big enough to work for that one so hopefully i mean this is still going to make this a little bit a lot longer hopefully give me a little bit more torque i'm able to i'm going to be able to make this happen hopefully i don't bust my wrench so let's see what we got here so now i'm going to take a quarter inch allen wrench and i'm going to put it back here in this hole so right here is where i was talking about in the back right i mean if any many of you guys ever had it in sync raider then you know that you can stick a quarter inch allen wrench in the bottom of this or the key that it comes with and you could hold that well that's actually what is spinning this right here and that's what we were holding well now this is kind of started i guess i could have done that in the first place um just to try to hold that bam we're off that's good actually like the pb blaster cleaned that up pretty nice and allowed us to get that out in my opinion all right so now we've got that bottom plate off of there with the blades and stuff on it you can see i mean just a solid little chunk of metal there for sure but definitely rusting off flaking apart and just starting to become a little bit brittle now we've got that apart we've got this stuff cleaned up a little bit and we can see what's going on here let's um okay that piece right there can be removed it looks like just a little washer looks like it's definitely getting eaten away because that does not look like it's the normal shape i don't know if that's packing or what that is teflon mop string something see it took a bit to get down in here but once we did you can see that this part of the metal right here completely rusted away all right and that that's why right there that's the cause of our leak so it took a little bit to find out why but we found it this is just a good little inside glimpse of something potentially that's gonna go wrong with your disposal you've always wondered like hey why do i gotta throw it away like can it be repaired well i guess it could i guess you probably could just swap the bottom out and slap a new one on there and it could be good i've just never even seen where you're able to buy just the bottom right that's interesting maybe i'll try to look into that a little bit more and find that because like i said i've replaced a lot i've just never done this and it was a chore to get in here but that's it that's our leak that's the reason why we had to get rid of our disposal all right folks so there we have it an in-depth look inside of all right folks so there we have it in-depth look inside of a badger one and sinker raider garbage disposal right we found the leak now my neighbor knows what happened to it why because he's a subscriber to the channel too right if you know somebody else that would like this video please share it subscribe come check us out again we'd love to have you keep coming back we're just trying to help people and as we grow we're able to help more and i love that concept thank you guys very much and we'll see you again real soon
