That Fix It Guy

What happens here

This project details the repair of rodent-damaged wiring in a 2012 Toyota Highlander. The process involves identifying the damaged wires, carefully stripping the insulation, splicing and soldering new wires from a replacement connector, applying heat shrink tubing for insulation and strain relief, and finally protecting the repaired section with split flex tubing and electrical tape. The repair concludes with clearing the check engine light using an OBD-II scan tool.

hey folks that fix it guy here today we're out at my wife's 2012 toyota highlander all right we had a crazy issue with it i thought it might have been the coil because we went up to the o'reillys we had him plug the old computer in the computer said that the number four cylinder was misfiring so i called my mechanic friend i said hey dude what's up with this above-bot he's like dude really easy to change it's actually gonna be your front coil to swap it out should be good to go well i got down in here looked at it started shooting a video blah blah wouldn't you know it not that at all so i'm gonna show you what it is come along let's get to fixing [Music] okay so here's what we're looking at this is the engine cover where the meat and potatoes of your engine is right here you're going to want to take that off just a plastic cover and it's held on by three little grommets just pop pop and pop once you remove that you'll see held on by one two and three okay and actually i think right away you can see right here it looks like something has been chewing right there all right sucks sucks okay so if we get down in here the actual center one of these coils see you got three in the front that's the center that's the number four that's the way that the engine fires okay so this turns out to be the number four and i thought i got it all cleaned up you could see and i thought that's what i was gonna change but then i started going back in here and i started looking and you can see right there something totally ate the wire okay and then if you get down in here more look you can actually see that they were just building a little nest like here's some of my wire piece or here's some of the wire so here's some of the wire covering and then actually my wire is down in here i just totally chewed it off so what i'm going to do is i'm actually going to clean all this up get all that stuff out of there and then i went i bought a new one of these connectors right so this right here just will you can push that little tab right there in on the side right here and that just pops off and we'll change this out you can see they went total nub right there kind of sucks man yeah so you can see right here that they actually did just tear some chunks of foam out of the bottom of that to make a bed this was only one day this was actually just thanksgiving day because my wife drives her car every single day and then like if you look over here at the battery we got actually some nutshells and we got some rat droppings awesome all right so doing a brief little inspection i really cross my fingers that that's the only two wires that this mouse chewed through okay so here's where we're at right we're gonna have to just peel this back a little bit more and we'll have to get in here and hopefully just these two we can get enough on there that we can put some put something new on there all right so as you can see the new one much like the old one just a little bit longer of wires let's begin now that we got that cover off a little bit let's grab some wire strippers pretty sure it's 16 gauge but how small these are it's so tricky that i'll just i don't know it's probably 18 that's probably 18 when it's all said and done i bet it was i don't know i just know that it's working now so o'reilly sells import direct oe replacement parts girl hooked this up for me this is a connector it's 40-0114 and we're going to put this bad boy on i don't want to leave so much wire floating around there but i am going to give myself a little bit of play so i think if i go to like right around there and i cut it i'm cutting a little bit off but i'll still give myself a little extra room that way if we mess up then i still got a thing so just go there and give it a chop okay that's looking pretty so before i go any further one thing i want to do here is i'm going to get this to where this is exactly the same i because there's two black wires here i want to make sure that one of these is going to be the neutral sometimes if you've got two black wires one's going to have ridges one's not but that's not the case so what i'm actually gonna do is i'm just gonna take a piece of this heat shrink and i'm gonna put this on here i just had a little i have a little extra right and i'm actually just gonna put this on here and just know that that's my neutral and it's going to connect to this neutral right here and now i'm actually just going to take my two pieces of hank shrink and i'm going to stick them on this side right here that way they're already on the wire and all i got to do is slide them over and heat them up okay so it's ready i just tested it a little bit it's got some solder on there so we're just gonna go ahead and oh and of course it popped right apart okay so i'm not positive if this works the same way copper pipe solder right whereas you can't touch the copper or else your fingerprint can even jack it up i don't know if that's the case you got those together like that and then just kind of twisted them around that it should stay but it didn't want to stay last time which sucked okay well we won't put that on there but we'll keep it kind of on there and hopefully that stays i kind of fanned them out pushed them together and twisted them just a little bit and got them all there and connected hopefully i did anyway okay so we got our solder gun heated back up now yeah i feel pretty confident with that right there let's see if i'm pulling on that tugging on that that ain't coming apart that's got a good solder so let's do this one just gonna do it like i did before where i just kind of i could just split this right i think if we split it grab this one get that twisted that looks like that worked out pretty well got that hooked up there so now let's just try to get that soldered i've actually found a place to set my solder gun down without shutting it off so i know it's nice and warm let's get our copper a little warm here okay that's a little bit big of a gob there but you know what it's soldered give it a test that ain't pulling apart that was white knuckle in it right there all right that's good to roll we're able to take both of our heat shrink wrap heats heat shrink right like that and that's gonna be great man one little piece that i trying to get that i can't get right there right back there we got our connector back together everything looks good that's cleaned out we'll plug this bad boy back in let's go take our car for a ride see how it rolls and then we'll come back and we'll wrap this up with some electrical tape or something and we'll be good to go okay so we just came to o'reilly's and we grabbed their scan tool we need to actually get rid of the codes to get our check engine light off so i'm going to show you how to plug that in real quick and then we're going to go through it and actually figure out how to erase it because i don't have a clue okay so you gotta take this plug-in right here for this reader and you gotta get down here and you gotta find this right here underneath your dash and then just get up underneath there and get that plugged into it okay that in turn is going to turn this on so now once you get that plugged in you actually got to turn your car on if it's push button you got to turn it on okay okay so now we've got that scanning a hundred percent it says we've got a cylinder 4 misfire detected well we're actually done with that this is all hooked up so then we actually want to erase so there actually is an erase button right there and this is how you're going to clear the code on your dash and then we just hit enter one moment erase was successful bam there is no code right there and we're good to go so here's what we got you see this little corrugated stuff right here well i actually went and bought some i bought the smallest one they have and so we're actually just going to cut this flex tubing to length and we'll just put this on here and then we'll do some more wrapping all right i've got some some of this super 33 this is electric tape and it's good it's got some good um waterproof properties so once we get that hooked up should be good to roll put this right here get a good measurement just get the last little bit in there that's all hooked up so now that's what it looks like right kind of looks like the rest we'll just get this all taped up be good to go pop pop pop done okay folks so that job is done and it's good and i'm glad i'm happy i'm back inside where it's warm and it's dry all right couple things from today one we practiced soldering we got it hooked up we made those connections good they're solid they're tight they're waterproof that's what we're looking for so the job's done a couple things that i end up using that i'm not 100 a fan of one is senior pop-up okay senior pop-up is going back to the store that coleman setup it's not grand man like why would i want a pop-up that leaks from the middle on me like at one point i wasn't even paying attention my tripod is just dripping water off of it like okay that sucks and it was because of the cross beams here and or there it's gone we're gonna have to find something anybody got a good comment or a good review on a pop-up that you guys really like put a link for me hook me up with something we need some i want one i've been meaning to buy one i sprung for one that i thought was good and fail all right but job done who would have thought that mice actually celebrate thanksgiving as well because this is the only day it could have happened it was the only day that her car wasn't running and man there was a lot of cherry seeds and wire that got ate i mean when he took almost a whole wire out of there it's kind of crazy like i thought that was nuts right and then to take all the stuffing off the the bottom of my cover like i get it you're cold you want a little warm bed but dude come on man it's all good it's hooked up we're happy it's back up and running the codes are cleared all right i really hope you folks enjoyed the video if you could please subscribe to the channel click the like button we'd love to have you keep coming back we're just trying to help people hope we're doing that thank you very much and we'll see you again real soon
