oh my God I just got off the phone with the hotel management my framers got kicked out of two hotels already they sent me these pictures right here let me know if they're justified in their decision this is ridiculous I don't know where they're going to stay now all right guys welcome back to another episode of building an apim cabin as your own builder and general contractor here in the woods today's episode is going to get a little sketchy let's get into it so what the guys are doing over there the plants call for 4 sections of lvls to be installed now lvls are these giant beefy um it almost looks like a a plywood that's laminated together uh and uh suspended up there on both sides and they're stacked three thick together so essentially we're going to have three boards this thick uh four of them uh on each Corner between the dining room and the kitchen uh this is a structural thing that's what the engineers called for so that's what we're doing originally plan was going to be take them up there by hand but they are so stinking heavy that there's there's no freaking way we're going to get that done shout out to Tate for the fork Clift cuz I don't know what we do without it so yesterday was a slow for momentum cuz these heavyduty lvls look how stacked they are they're so thick 32 ft long really heavy it took a while so essentially for paying 12 of them with a crew of three people it took an entire day but that's our structural support for the middle so there's no load load bearing wall today's day should go a lot faster I'm assuming we got these ey joist that are rafters for the roof they are 14 in wide a lot lighter than the LVL so um that should go a little bit faster I'm assuming uh but also we're getting some reinforcement we're getting another two guys that are going to be coming up today fingers cross these go up today maybe tomorrow and then once they go up they can actually start doing the second floor cuz the floor joists are going to get connected to those via some heavy duty bracketing lots of exciting things happening today [Music] so this is completely genius and this is why I can't do this by myself is the way they're getting these 32t Rafters that are 14 in wide is the the guy's cut it ahead of time then they'll throw a rope up there there's a guy with the nail gun up there and they will throw the rope across so one guy is pulling it down while this guy is pushing it up the guy on top catches it and Nails it into place three guys banging it out like freaking Wizards now that the front side of the house actually has Rafters going up there it's you could feel what the space is going to be like and when the architect designs it and like I said this place is like 1,00 ft and A-frames like I mentioned is the worst design cuz what ends up happening is I'm 6'2 this is the ceiling height and we still have another probably 3 and 1/2 4 ft uh that's unusable space but a couch can still go deep inside of it that you could sit stand and not clip your head so it kind of puts it in perspective when you actually see all of this here it's so cool if you have anyone relying on your income you need life insurance it's no instructions from the architect that I can call them uh so the transition from the rafter to our siding here the plans show that there's supposed to be a gap so the pl show that these are cut uh up to here then there is a 2x8 subfascia that goes here and then siding goes over that as the roof rafter uh metal roof goes over here's the problem though the architect design a 2x8 subface that goes there in fact two of them stacked to make this distance they don't make a 2x8 subf shim they don't um uh so we have to consider the material that's out there so what we kind of came up with and I spoke to the sighing guys is we're going to trim this to this size here we're going to put two boards that are 2x8s stacked together to make this distance this is not a 2x8 this is a 1x6 and then that'll create this nub down below here the siding will go over it and then we're going to cover this with a piece of siding sofit trim essentially this is the sucky part I have instructions but they're based off of products just don't exist for this application and that's the most frustrating part right now [Music] so it took the guys about 2 days to hang all of these long 32- Footers up there now they're start working on hanging off of the 14-in LVL coming over this e right here and this is the hangers that are going to attach to them these are crazy cuz you can't just go into Home Depot and buy these they have these swivels on them just because how aggressive these angles are they got got a bracket for everything that's slick so hopefully they get this banged out in about the rest of the day and then tomorrow they'll start working on building out that uh pocket that's holding that A-frame to the beam together kind of like the last part oh did I mention we're also 12 uh ey Joys short yeah the building Place didn't consider the overhang on that side of the Gable and overhang on this side of the Gable so fun Parts building a cust down aame oh we have our roofing metal roof coming up sitting completely flush with that we're going to have our siding material coming down here there's a little Gap here and then to cover that Gap the siding guys as this siding overlaps they're going to be able to use this tuby material to attach to the bottom here as the world's tiniest inch and a half soft we figured it out we figured it out so with the plans it doesn't show framing for the Gable but the image the rendering has a Gable and besides you need the Gable there to have that covering over when you open the front door uh through the dining room and the second thing the plans are not so clear on that we can't get clarity on is for the framing structure it's calling to have this wall come straight down let me get a wider image here so essentially where this top Plate's going it should drop down here but the renderings first of all there's no size on the plans for it and the rendering is showing that this is a completely wide openen concept and as soon as you bring those walls down on both sides this is now a closed concept and you don't get as crazy of a view so we decided to just keep this slant as it is to keep an open concept and just build that pony wall to the top um we'll see what the inspector Sayes cuz we're just following plans at this point architect signs off on it engineer sign signed off on it the city signed off on it but we'll see when it comes to the actual inspection cuz that's what matters [Music] now making a lot of progress they're moving up to do the upstairs Loft and bathroom basically the upstairs um I don't know how I feel about ie joist because structurally they're very strong um in fact they switch them map from smaller lvls to these uh but they get attached kind of unique and here's what I mean by it the architect Engineers designed that these eye joist because this material is really thin and this is the big structural part of the eye essentially they get attached via the plans uh what they call OSB web stiffeners so to make up the same exact Plum uh of this part you put an OSB there and then you nail it from the bottom that's kind of weird um there's also a hardware that gets attached so they don't go anywhere so don't about that but on top they're getting the same web stiffener so if you see the eye joist right there they can't just attached through here we need to fill this space so they're going to put OSB to the side and then nail them from the side kind of weird um not my design I would have loved to see some Hardware but the engineers crunch the numbers I guess is what we're doing also I am dying to see what the comment section of this project looks like of all the uh quote unquote keyboard Warriors and experts whove being in the field for so long it's like look we got all these architectural plans drawn up engineering pass them all so it looks sketchy and Shady from one aspect but it's I'm reassured that you know there's people who are smarter than me who who did the design and the numbers and we're just going to follow him but needless to say I don't think I'm going to be building another house for a while at least if I do it's not going to be a unique design like this we're going to have freaking Rafters all done up and craned in and building more boxy than a-f framy well the exposure too much sorry sorry but needless to say I don't think I'll be building a brand new construction for a while and if I do it's definitely going to be a lot simpler straightforward design where people don't have to rely on me for answers of how to do it cuz I don't know what I'm doing I don't like surprises and this is a definitely a surprise all of our windows and doors are here which I hope they're all here but as you can see the framing is not done yet so I have no point of them so they're going to be in the weather elements here and also some of these things are 4 500 lb and we got a slope over there technically the roof should be on first before this comes in but we got a week delay on the roof doing things out of order oh and by the way plumbers are showing up next week just my luck first couple lines are coming up here it's going to be interesting what happens at the rest of like anything past 8 ft it's very steep it's hard to get the materials up there we have a couple ideas one idea I suggested is we use two 2x4s with a v-n both people slide it up but then what happens when get to the very tippy top then we're contemplating possibly throwing a rope over hooking it at Each corner and hoisting it up that still might be a possibility but he's convinced that possibly he's going to put a harness on attach himself and then carry the sheet of plywood up a certain stairs that we could make along side here uh that seems incredibly dangerous but we're going to see what solution is best for the situation I'm actually very curious to learn myself all right folks we are uh week over uh as planned on schedule so we're looking at week three right now they got the upstairs here um bedroom one Loft area with a pull out couch here staircase with railing bathroom upstairs bathroom right here uh unfortunately you lose quite a bit of space like I said with this A-frame but that just kind of comes with this territory the plan was to have these guys be done today but uh obviously we're not there yet very complicated build boy oh boy very complicated we're pushing the plumbers out the roofer showing up today to measure it and hopefully we can get our supplies in for next week but man this is more complicated than I thought this would be [Music] oh I can throw it but uh catching is a different [Music] part oh this is not supposed to be the dangerous part that's the dangerous part this is the easy part so heavy when it comes from there so one of two things is going to happen here once he's cutting that off we don't have a large opening there though we have a 16in sid overhang so when that thing Falls it has to not hit the building and it can't Crush our hoses which he doesn't think it's going to crush the hoses but I think best case scenarios it hits that chunk of dirt that's on the side there and uh hopefully no other casualties happen from that also the balls on him for being up there and doing that cuz I would be crapping my pants right now that works so much better than I thought it going to work in my head dude you're good you're good I don't know if you're lucky or you're really really good at this all right guys I heard you loud and clear every solution has a problem and that can be more truthful about this cabin build series it's not every problem has a solution I wish that was the case but we are getting into problem after problem so we came up with a merch line every solution has a problem they are perfect fit teas hugsy are on the bicep they're nice and Tall oh by the way this is a little sneak peek but go snag one I'll link them down description below help support this project and support this Channel and let's get back to his it's cold it's 38° already man we are chasing the winter got a call yesterday the guy said good news bad news good news is we're getting really close to being done which I'm like that's incredible news he go bad news is we ran out of cheating so I had to stop by in town before coming up here brought 12 sheets of OSB some clips for the roof seems like that's the part they're kind of missing but let's go see what's going on [Music] today the guys called me they were like can you bring more batteries for the speaker we need music I was like say less I got you sh when people are like what's it like building a cabin well this is what it looks like building a cabin you're the cleanup lady I'm surprised I'm not making them sandwiches at this point I'm doing my part and I'm doing my part I'm not doing noas he's carrying two sheets I'm double the size I'm carrying one sheet this guy's a lunatic [Music] doors so maybe we do a two uh one person on each side and then we can maybe put a rope so two guys on the on the middle can kind of prop it up a little bit too yeah let's try first okay that's not bad can you uh come on this side to hold it from tipping over no we can put a rope underneath here two guys and two guys time okay one two three oh that's better okay keep it with your shoulders oh leaning set it down I don't know how they're going to install this but they're making it my problem they go we don't have the equipment to bring it over you're supposed to have a dolly or some kind of system leaning leaning okay to oh I don't want to pass out here oh was it just two guys that were delivering it how are they going to take it off the truck we help them I know but if you guys weren't here how would they do it [Music] ready we need a somebody oh we're going to lean it a little bit ready those guys are built different they're built way different they got all that practice lugging the O be sheets of a 2112 roof pitch I'm out of [Music] condition this one's a I think I'd rather sat a beam one more time than carry these car you didn't do anything I know at least I would rather watch all right I figured I'd answer a couple of common questions that I've been constantly seeing uh in the comment section about the cabin to clarify some stuff don't want to be leaving you guys in the dark so one of the popular questions am I building anything myself or is it all going to get built for me uh the whole point of these videos are going to be a little bit different I wanted to try the series where you're hiring you're basically acting as your own general contract your own builder so I wanted to learn what that process looks like and I think there's a lot of people who have value in that as well plus an aame cabin is not straight and clear to the point to build even my experienced framers are having problems following the plans cuz there's not a lot of detail that you'd expect to be on a traditional house so yeah I'm I'm basically taking you guys along through this process once we get inside the house you know the bathrooms all that stuff I'll be doing uh but in the meantime we're getting them involved plus I'm in a race against the clock for snowfall we're right now you're seeing this video way later but it's we got one more month before snow starts coming out there's no way I could even build you know a third of this house by myself so that's IE why I'm getting framers and contractors involved second common question I got as the previous episode you saw was the Fiasco that we had with getting a hotel stays for the framers the crew uh like I you remember I couldn't find anything it was last minute it kind I showed up and they said we were told you're going to give us a place to live everything's booked out it's like good luck booking a hotel the night of in an area that there's only three motels that are Mom and Pop run but it as chaotic as it was we got them all lodged I think because there's three motels they bounced around eight different rooms uh one a group of guys would stay in one room and they would just switch room from room that any room that was available that's how we got them all housed Thank God now we're three and a half weeks into this and all their lodging is already covered so they didn't have to St sleep in their cars or anything so funny story in terms of getting rooms for them three motels not a whole lot of places they're tiny almost Airbnb like Mom and Pop run places so they have rules like airbnbs do like you have to clean up after yourself you know all this stuff and uh they didn't get the message so out of the three motels they got kicked out of two so I got hit with all the cleaning fee charges I had to profusely apologize on the phone cuz they called me uh I get it you know it's a small area it's hard to find you know uh employees to work on these little mom pops places their small run I get it and I'm thankful they allowed for my guys to make it this far but uh that was that's quite a bit of babysitting I had to do that I wasn't anticipating so here's some pictures from the hotel management they sent me complaining so this first one you know there's trash over by the trash can and they couldn't fit more stuff in there so they just put it next to it this one is just a wet countertop I I don't know maybe somebody spilled something they never wiped it down this one looks like the inside rubber part gasket of a refrigerator is just loose who knows if my guys did it or that's just an old place that they're staying at this is what just looks like liquid in the trash can I I don't know how to answer that that's I don't I don't know this one looks like it's some kind of rings…
