Fix stripped door hinge screws! thanks ZZem screw for sponsoring and supporting #repair #door
What happens here
For severely damaged door jambs where the wood around the hinge mortise is split, rotten, or deteriorated, a more extensive "engineered fix" is required. First, carefully remove the hinge and use a hammer and chisel to cut out a rectangular section of the damaged jamb, extending deep enough to remove all compromised wood. Cut a new wood block to precisely fit this void. Apply wood glue to the block (optional) and tap it into place, creating a solid surface. Then, drill pilot holes and install Z-screws through this new wood block and into the structural framing behind it, ensuring a very strong attachment. Finally, re-attach the door hinge to this newly reinforced area using appropriate hinge screws.
Goal: Repair severely damaged door jambs with a wood block and Z-screws to create a solid mounting surface.
Tools and materials
- Chisel — Cutting out damaged wood from the door jamb
- Cordless Drill/Driver Makita — Drilling pilot holes and driving screws
- Driver Bit — Engaging with the screw head
- Hammer — Using with a chisel to remove damaged wood
- Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes during chiseling and drilling
- Existing Door Hinge Masonite — The component being re-secured
- Existing Door Hinge Screws — Securing the hinge to the repaired jamb
- Wood Block — Filling the void in the damaged jamb to create a new, solid mounting surface
- Wood Glue — Securing the wood block into the jamb
- Z-Screws — Securing the new wood block to the structural framing
