What happens here

To establish a straight fence line, begin by setting sturdy corner posts. Once the corner posts are in place, stretch a piece of Mason's string very tightly between them. This string acts as a 'straight edge' against which all subsequent fence posts will be aligned. Position the outside edge of each post so it barely touches the string, without pushing or deflecting the line. For securing the string to intermediate posts, the presenter suggests drilling a screw or nail partway into the post, wrapping the string around it, and then removing it later.

Goal: Establish an accurate, straight guide for fence post placement

Tools and materials

  • Corner Posts — Anchoring the beginning and end of the fence line
  • Drill — Drilling pilot holes for screws to tie off the string
  • Knife — Used to secure string (less ideal than screw/nail)
  • Nail — As an alternative to a screw for tying off the string
  • Screws — As an alternative to a nail for tying off the string
