What happens here
Once all pavers are laid and cut, install edge restraints around the perimeter of the paver field. These can be flexible plastic or rigid aluminum restraints, secured with long paver spikes driven into the aggregate base. This step is critical to prevent the pavers from shifting or spreading over time. After the edge restraints are secured, sweep a generous amount of polymeric sand over the entire paver surface. Use a stiff broom to work the sand deeply into all the paver joints. Compact the entire paver surface with a plate compactor to settle the pavers and fill the joints. Sweep more polymeric sand into any remaining gaps and repeat compaction. Finally, lightly mist the surface with a garden hose to activate the polymeric sand, which will harden and lock the pavers in place.
Goal: Secure the paver field, fill joints, and lock pavers in place
Tools and materials
- Garden Hose with Spray Nozzle Gilmour — Lightly misting polymeric sand to activate it
- Hammer Stanley — Driving paver spikes
- Paver Spikes Techniseal — Securing the edge restraints into the base
- Plastic Edge Restraints Snap Edge — Holding pavers firmly in place at the perimeter
- Plate Compactor Wacker Neuson — Final compaction of the paver surface
- Stiff Broom Libman — Sweeping polymeric sand into paver joints
- Polymeric Sand Techniseal — Filling paver joints to lock them in place and inhibit weed growth
