What happens here
This project provides an in-depth look at a specially designed heavy-duty flatbed trailer by Southland Trailers, focusing on its unique 'cambered' I-beam construction, which enhances strength and durability. The video demonstrates the trailer's capacity by loading and towing a large wheel loader, while engineers explain the technical advantages of its design. It serves as a product showcase and an educational piece on advanced trailer engineering, explicitly warning against replicating the heavy load demonstration due to safety and legal concerns.

(8,487 characters)[Music] good go okay oh drop her down keep going keep going down okay pull forward Scott up down a tich little more that up forward down go all the way down we're [Music] in [Music] all right guys I'm up at Southland trailers and what you're seeing behind us is a 40,000 lb loader but what you're not seeing quite yet is a brand new trailer this is brand new first of a Kind right no other Trailer Company I've ever seen before has done with a Hot Shots trailer this is a trailer designed to go behind a one ton pickup truck but obviously this trailer is going to be able to handle a lot bigger load than that so make sure you guys stick around cuz we got a lot of show today right here it comes all right here it comes okay so I I just turned on the camera this gets edited out it's fine guys Seth Adrian you guys know Trevor the crazy Canadian they're all Beauty freaking crazy Canadians um this is the only you you guys explain it's got a camber to it but this is the only flat deck trailer that has a camber because they can't have a camber otherwise so this is built like a semi-trailer am I right or wrong I don't you you guys tell me you're the engineers yeah yeah that's correct you can't put a camber on I beam you have to have an engineered beam so you can have a camber in the deck I beam is just a straight flat trailer this has the camber how much camber is in this oh it varies per trailer this one is well we don't do it by like inches of camber we do it by radius so it's a constant radius camber be around two two two in in the center probably this one is a 26-footer so yeah we're looking between like about 2 and 1 half Ines probably okay what is the benefit of camber though it gives you a more efficient beam so normally uh you have a straight IE beam as as it as it flexes down your entire beam is going into tension some tension at the top of the beam a lot of tension at the bottom of the beam with this the top of the beam's in compression the bottom of the beam's in tension about the same amount and the center of the beam is neutral so it's it's carrying a lot of weight without being put into too much stress so your strength to weight ratio of that beam is basically you have a higher strength for a less weight of your beam so that's basically what it's what it's doing and then aesthetically wise as you load that it's coming down comes down nice and flat and it just looks like it's designed for it rather than if it was straight and it's flexing down it looks like your trailer is starting to break and then if you hit a big bump when you're flexing down you can go into fatigue mode right so this helps you to to lengthen the life of the trailer potentially yeah that's correct because you have less stress in the center of the beam you have overall your beam is less stressed all the time so your fatigue your fatigue life is going to be higher because you have less stress Peaks so especially with those big bumps your stress isn't going to go as high so your fatigue life is going to be extended okay so I never seen another flat deck trailer cuz this is designed for a hot shot truck right this isn't really designed for a semi but we're going to push it right to its absolute limit we have it behind a larger truck this is actually designed to go between behind an F you know a three a onton pickup trucker a little bigger yeah right does anybody else you know of build something like this you know only the ones that would be engineering their own beams that would have that camber in it there's only a handful of people that actually do that but in this line in this industry I don't know so you see it in semi-trailers all the time you don't see it in Hot Shot trailers and that's what this is so this trailer is rated to what 40,000 lb gross vehicle weight rating 40,000 lb and look what we got we got a big loader over there so we're going to test it out and then we're going to take her down the road and give her a spin right beautiful all right sounds like a plan sounds good to you too sounds the first test of the Proto these guys are coming [Music] there right let go all right we got to go down the road we got to see how she rolls all right we got her loaded up but that doesn't mean nothing you can throw a heavy piece of equipment onto anything now now will it actually pull and how will it pull let's find out that out next we were more worried about the truck than the trailer I think we should try it you want to try it what do you think Scotty what's that if we put the pickup the pickup yeah Pi up my dad's pickup very nice unbelievable that was smooth they worked at the engineering of those torsion springs over and over again to get a 6ft beaver tail a 12T HD ramp full length 12 ft long they've worked real hard at getting that torsion spring dialed in so that you can actually lift that up and close it you saw it right here yeah onehanded onehanded and look at that she's that that she's still got camber yeah you can still see it's got camber right there no deviation no problems I suck so it looks like you still have camber here mhm but she's just flat and level right where the loader is do you see that or is that am I seeing something different you tell me uh if you look down the center of the be here it's kind of it's it's holding that camber oh dude it's still got the camber yeah I mean you don't really want it to go level no uh if you had if you had a really long heavy bundle of Steel on here let's say you're putting a couple 20,000lb bundles of Steel on there and you and you block evenly you might see a little bit of that camber coming out it'll never go negative on these I with a 2 and 1/2 in camber like that you probably have to put 100,000 lb on it to actually level it out oh jeez okay and then other stuff would start to break so don't do that so just to be clear that trailer there with that loader is designed to go behind this pickup truck here but we are severely overloading it for this test and I don't want to wreck the truck we're not worried about the trailer we're worried about the [Music] way keep that W keep that turn wide enough get that turn wide enough go wider go wider doer wider wider go home get her going wider y go wider we go that was a tight turn that's a big load big load tight turn okay first off I want to put a disclaimer in it do not do this just don't don't try this at home some of you guys are going to see us doing this and you're going I saw it on a dirt Monkey video don't just don't so what is this rated to tell me about the rating on it I got triple 12,000 lb axles in here we loaded a 40,000 lb loader onto it our gross on this trailer is 40,000 lb the trailer weighs 7 7100 lb empty so I'm legally good to put 33,000 lb on it okay so and it's got a 26t deck 26t deck yeah does that include the beaver no 26t straight deck plus a 6ft beaver tail fold over ramps I got 12 ft of ramps at the end there you can see it driving down okay Beauty so what does that give you on flat space on top then 26 plus 6 flat space on top 32 ft 32 ft okay there you go and we didn't we didn't lose the camber in it camber stayed true all the engineer says it'll it could go up to 100,000 lbs but a lot of other crap will break before that so don't do that either don't do anything you see in my video let's just let's just put that out there right this is a factory tour on Factory trained Canadians and we have a lot of too much fun and I just want to say thank you man thank bu I appreciate it thanks St for come on man thank you for letting me come up here thanks to everybody these Southland guys this is a family run business man mom and dad started this thing 43 years ago the kids took it over it's still a family run business right from stem to stern and it's been a phenomenal experience I hope you guys have enjoyed the ride as well I had a blast coming up here rolling cargo trailers overloading dump trailers overloading brand new trailers that just came fresh out of the paint booth yeah I hope you guys had fun too but that's it for this one God bless go get them you guys and we'll catch you on another one except you probably want to know how do you find out more about a Southland trailer huh right how do you head our website www.s Southland trailers.com look us out there'll be a dealer somewhere close to you where you can get your own stuff how many times do I end a video and then I stop then I re end it till next have a good one guys we'll catch you
