What happens here

After installing all the light fixtures and connecting their respective low-voltage wiring, it's time to connect the entire system to a low-voltage transformer. The transformer should be mounted in a discreet, weather-protected location near a standard 120V outdoor outlet. Carefully connect the main low-voltage wires from your lighting runs to the appropriate terminals on the transformer, ensuring all connections are tight and secure. Plug the transformer into a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protected outdoor outlet. Turn on the power and test all the lights. Walk through your hardscape at dusk or night to assess the lighting effect. Adjust the aiming of uplights or reposition path lights as needed to achieve the desired illumination and ambiance. This final test and adjustment phase ensures that your integrated hardscape lighting not only looks fantastic but also functions safely and effectively.

Goal: Connect all installed lights to a low-voltage transformer and perform final testing and adjustments.

Tools and materials

  • GFCI Outdoor Outlet — Providing electrical shock protection for the transformer
  • Low-Voltage Transformer — Converting household voltage to low voltage for the lighting system
  • Screwdriver Set — Tightening wire connections on the transformer
  • Voltage Meter — Checking voltage at various points in the system (troubleshooting)
  • Work Gloves — Protecting hands during installation
