does it truly matter?

What happens here

If choosing rigid PVC pipe (as part of the 'flex vs rigid' discussion), installation requires precise cutting and careful solvent welding. Use a PVC pipe cutter or a fine-toothed saw to cut rigid PVC pipes to the exact lengths required. Apply PVC primer to the outside of the pipe ends and the inside of all fittings. Immediately after priming, apply a generous, even coat of PVC cement to both surfaces and quickly join the pipe and fitting with a quarter-turn, holding firmly for at least 30 seconds to ensure a strong chemical bond. Repeat for all connections, ensuring a watertight and structurally sound plumbing system. This method is crucial where higher rigidity, pressure resistance, or specific flow characteristics are desired.

Goal: Assemble and install rigid PVC pipe sections with solvent welding.

Tools and materials

  • PVC Fittings — Connecting rigid PVC pipe sections and changing direction
  • PVC Pipe Cutter — Cutting PVC pipes cleanly and precisely
  • Rigid PVC Pipe — Transporting water for the pool system (e.g., skimmer, return, main drain lines)
  • PVC Cement — Chemically welding PVC pipes and fittings together for a watertight seal
  • PVC Primer — Preparing PVC surfaces for cementing to ensure a strong bond
