does it truly matter?

What happens here

After all plumbing is connected and successfully pressure tested (this crucial step is assumed to have occurred), carefully backfill the trenches. Begin by adding a layer of sand or fine gravel around and over the pipes to cushion them and protect them from sharp objects in the native soil. This bedding material also helps distribute pressure evenly around the pipes. Once the pipes are adequately bedded, backfill the remainder of the trench with the excavated soil, compacting it in layers (typically 6-12 inches at a time) to prevent future settling, which could lead to uneven surfaces or stress on the plumbing. Ensure the final grade slopes away from the pool to prevent water accumulation.

Goal: Protect the installed plumbing by backfilling trenches and restoring the ground surface.

Tools and materials

  • Hand Tamper or Plate Compactor — Compacting soil in layers
  • Rake — Spreading and leveling soil
  • Shovel — Moving soil and bedding material
  • Excavated Soil — Backfilling the trenches
  • Sand or Fine Gravel — Bedding material to cushion pipes
