DAY 1 OF 3: Appalachian Heritage Old Timey Hog Killing...Killing and scalding
What happens here
The dispatched hog is carefully lowered into the heated water of the scalding tub. The goal is to heat the hog's skin to a temperature that opens its pores, allowing the hair to be easily removed. The hog is continuously moved and rotated within the tub using metal hog hooks and chains to ensure even heating. Specialized hog scrapers (small, bell-shaped metal tools with a wooden handle) are then used to scrape off the loosened hair and the top layer of skin. This process is done by several people working together, applying firm pressure and moving the scrapers along the hog's body.
Goal: Remove all hair and the outer layer of skin from the hog.
