Built In Deck Seating You'll [ACTUALLY] Want To Sit In

What happens here

Before beginning construction, carefully plan the layout of your outdoor living space. Use blue painter's tape to mark the exact footprint of the L-shaped couch directly on the composite deck boards. This visual guide will help in confirming optimal dimensions and ensuring there is enough space for additional elements like a bar top, stools, and appliances without making the area feel crowded. Consider the overall flow and functionality of the space, ensuring comfortable passage around the furniture. This step also involves pre-planning the integration of any electrical components like speaker wires or lighting within the couch's structure.

Goal: Visualize and confirm the couch's dimensions and placement within the outdoor living area.

Tools and materials

  • Blue Painter's Tape — Marking the couch's footprint and other outdoor kitchen elements on the deck surface
  • Tape Measure Milwaukee — Taking precise measurements for the layout

[Music] Do you want us to all come up here as like human bodies to kind of stand in the places that humans will be standing? >> Uh, I don't think so. I think I think the tape is going to it's going to do that job pretty well. Uh we're working with limited space here, so really trying to tape out everything. Chairs, table, uh getting the exact size of everything. And something I thought about which I think could be really cool is actually doing instead of chairs on this side, we can do like a bench, >> built-in bench, maybe potentially a floating bench. So, you know, you can kind of get the feet a little bit underneath of that bench. You know what I mean? >> Okay. >> Need a couple, you know, couple extra inches. It's a game of inches here. So, we want to have enough room for this without it being too crowded, but you know, we're going to go with a smaller size table here. But really, we want to maximize this bar space. That's what we want to do. We want to get this as big as possible without it being too tight with the table. So, um, what we're playing around with is potentially doing a, uh, fridge right in our at the end of our bar top, but that's going to cut into We have the fridge facing this way. >> We're going to cut into our seating space about 2 ft. >> So, >> we're really close on being able to fit four uh, stools. That would be the absolute minimum we would want to do here. So, taping this out. Going to go over it with the client and make a decision on whether we want to bring this out a tiny bit further. We can still have a little bit of room for that. Or do we eliminate the fridge inside this bar top? That's going to give us two extra feet of stool space here. So, just really trying to lay this out because once we build it, it's not going to move. the table. We're not gonna have much flexibility there either. We're gonna get as close to the wall as possible. So, uh, that's what I'm trying to do here. Everything's going to be built in. Built-in bar, potentially a built-in, uh, bench seat for the table, built-in couch. So, we want it to be right on. Once it's built, it's not changing. What do you think? >> I think that's great. If we do a bench there, can it have a hinged for storage? >> If we do what? >> A bench there. Can it have a hinged lid for storage? >> Potentially, but I really like the idea of it just being a floating uh bench top. The other thing, if we do a if we do a…
