What happens here

Mix the concrete in a wheelbarrow, adding water gradually until it reaches a workable consistency. Pour a thin base layer of concrete into the prepared form. Place metal reinforcement mesh on top of this first layer, ensuring it is centered. Pour the remaining concrete over the mesh, spreading it evenly. Use a 2x4 to screed the concrete, leveling it with the top of the forms and the existing slab. Use a trowel to smooth the surface, dragging it to bring the 'skim coat' of fine material to the top. Finish by adding a bevel or radius to the edges and inserting wet anchors where future posts will be located.

Goal: Create a smooth, reinforced, and properly anchored concrete slab extension.

Tools and materials

  • 2x4 Lumber — Screeding the concrete to level it
  • Edge Trowel — Creating a rounded or beveled edge on the slab
  • Metal Reinforcement Mesh — Providing tensile strength to the concrete
  • Shovel — Mixing concrete and placing it into forms
  • Trowel — Smoothing the concrete surface
  • Water Hose — Adding water to the concrete mix
  • Wet Anchors — Anchoring future pergola posts into the wet concrete
  • Wheelbarrow True Temper — Mixing and transporting concrete
  • Concrete Mix Quikrete — The main structural component of the slab

[Music] we're gonna throw in some steel reinforcements something a lot of guys will argue with you and tell you all I know you've got to do use rebar for concrete no listen there's the wrong way of doing it and then there's the right way of doing it but there's a lot of different right ways of doing it I usually do about an inch or two of cement concrete and then lay this down and then hopper off with the rest Abhishek is gonna sit right in the middle all right so getting ready five legs out here we need a nice along 2x4 they'll basically run and allow for us to reference the existing paver we're gonna see low spots like this just grab some of this throw it back in there and go over it again until it's flattened once it's all done we're gonna start using our trowel and leveling that smoothly what you'll see is the water will start evaporating and coming to the top and it'll create like a little skim coat all we'll have to do is is drag it along and move it out of the way to allow for it to leave that was create a nice smooth top finish alright so we've got a conch report it's smooth we got a bevel radius on we have our wet anchor in place now in terms of concrete finish I am probably 90% happy with it this is my second concrete job ever the peaks over here you see the rocks more on top it's still smooth it's still strong for the the sand is not rising to the top and the rocks sinking down and I think it's because that batch that I put of concrete mix right there it wasn't as wet as it should have been to allow for the rocks to sink and the sand to rise to the sand is kind of what makes it that finish on top so nonetheless really happy with it that means my third concrete job I'll ever do it's gonna
