What happens here

Cut 2x6 lumber pieces for the horizontal and vertical elements of the pergola. Apply a 50-degree miter cut to the ends of the horizontal beams. Raise and secure the first two horizontal beams flush with the top of the 4x4 posts, using large lag bolts for structural support. Next, install additional 2x6s vertically across the top, spacing them evenly. These can be secured with 3-inch (7.6 cm) screws driven at an angle from the top, or by notching them about 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) to sit recessed onto the horizontal beams for a more finished look.

Goal: Assemble the top structure of the pergola.

Tools and materials

  • 2x6 Lumber — Constructing the horizontal and vertical elements of the pergola
  • 3-inch Screws — Securing the vertical pergola beams
  • Cordless Drill/Driver DeWalt — Driving lag bolts and screws
  • Ladder — Reaching high areas of the pergola
  • Lag Bolts — Securing the main horizontal beams to the posts
  • Miter Saw DeWalt — Cutting 2x6s to length and applying miter cuts

this thing out [Music] these are two by sixes I just put a 50 degree miter at the ends basically two inch gap we're gonna raise them flush up to the top right there big lag bolts screwed into place and then after that we're gonna put another two by six going basically vertically and then one by ones on top I'm gonna stack it up it's gonna give this cool up I don't know if dr. Japanese kind of thing feel I don't know I've seen pictures of it look cool want to try it okay [Music] now you can match them about I don't know an inch or two to sit or recess down on top of this beam but you don't have to I've tilt this pergola and it's just sitting on there in the way secure there's just three inch screws going at an angle into this section from the top you can't see them and it looks great
